iTunes Review

1980’s Unmasked was forged in the midst of growing tensions. Peter Criss walked out during the sessions — his drumming replaced by an uncredited Anton Fig before Eric Carr joined the band, taking on the fox persona. Also, Ace Frehley purportedly had to fight to keep his songs on the album. And producer Vini Poncia gave the album much more commercial pop polish in the mix than fans of the band cared for. But what was considered over-produced in 1980 has somehow aged pretty well. Take the sixth song, “Tomorrow.” What may have sounded like teenage movie soundtrack fodder back then now sounds like Dwight Twilley- inspired power-pop taken to the next level. And the opening song “Is That You?” struts just like a trademark KISS tune with the band’s penchant for hard boogie riffs — this time played under overt flirtations with pop-metal. Frehely’s trifecta of awesome jams — “Talk to Me,” “Two Sides of the Coin” and “Torpedo Girl” — attempts to compensate fans who were still nonplussed at KISS’ going disco a year before with “I Was Made For Loving You” from Dynasty.

Strongest Album

While Unmasked leans very much towards pop, it is probably the strongest Kiss album in terms of music writing and performance. All songs are catchy and strong on vocal melodies - very much unlike most Kiss songs. If Kiss were to rerecord these and crank up the volume and lose the synths, even the most ardent metalhead couldn't ignore it. Kiss tried a slightly different style and unfortunately it didn't catch at the time. I still rate this as my favorite Kiss album due to the strength of all songs and not just one or two as is the case on most of their efforts.

Very Good KISS Record!

Bought this in the Fall of '80 and it sounds just as good today. Risky as it was for KISS to stray from their "usual sound" and subject matter, it was a great representation of what was so popular at the time. Full of polished riffs and synth sounds mixed with power pop and disco. Eceptionally good "pop" writing and harmony. Falling in line with what a lot of other "rock" icons of the 1970s were doing bewteen 1978 and 1981...making disco-style records...Rolling Stones, Elton John, J.Giles Band, Rod Stewart, Styxx, and KISS was no exception. Best songs are "Tomorrow", "What Makes The World Go Round", "Easy As It Seems", "Shandi" and "Is That You". Enjoy it, KISS fans!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Rooted in the campy theatrics of Alice Cooper and the sleazy hard rock of glam rockers the New York Dolls, Kiss became a favorite of American teenagers in the '70s. Most kids were infatuated with the look of Kiss, not their music. Decked out in outrageously flamboyant costumes and makeup, the band fashioned a captivating stage show featuring dry ice, smoke bombs, elaborate lighting, blood spitting, and fire breathing that captured the imaginations of thousands of kids. But Kiss' music shouldn't be...
