Album Review

When Jamie Foxx released his first album in 1994, he was a star on In Living Color with a decent-sized following who declared, "No, really, he can sing — he's alright!" A decade later, Foxx was a major movie star who had impressed Clive Davis enough to be offered a new recording deal. Though he didn't release any albums during the intervening years, Foxx was determined to stay active in music and collaborated with Adina Howard, Gladys Knight, and Melvin Riley. He appeared on the Any Given Sunday soundtrack, made a minor breakthrough on Twista and Kanye West's "Slow Jamz," and then became a superstar with his portrayal of Ray Charles in Ray. Just when it seemed like he'd spend the remainder of his recording career as a Ray Charles impressionist, he put together Unpredictable, his second solo album. Now packing major clout as a recording artist, Foxx received big-name production help from Mike City, Timbaland, and Sean Garrett, along with guest spots from Twista, West, the Game, Ludacris, Common, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige. Though he fits somewhere between R. Kelly and Ginuwine, Foxx has more than enough personality and talent to defend his music against accusations of opportunism. He can belt and proclaim with authority, but he's best when he's smooth and mellow — an asset, to be sure, since not many modern R&B vocalists trade in subtleties. Lyrically, Foxx is not subtle — he's a freak who at least balances the crude ("Make you turn around and touch your toes/The next thing, girl, you already know") with the silly ("I know you're used to dinner and a movie/Why not be my dinner while makin' a movie?"). Unpredictable is actually predictable in that all but one of its tracks have something — or a lot — to do with baby making. Foxx drops the salaciousness near the end and proves that he can do teary eyed adult contemporary with as much ease as the bedroom material.

Unpredictable Review

by DJ Z-Side

Jamie Foxx performs excellently on this album, and this is possibly one of my favorite albums...

Unpredictable [feat. Ludacris] (4.5/5) - Jim Jonsin's production goes well against Jamie Foxx's voice as well as nasty lyrics. It's a very nice blend of smooth R&B and hip hop. Ludacris also adds a lot to the track with his verse. One of my favorite songs on the album.

Warm Bed (3/5) - Mr. Collipark's smooth yet raunchy production works with the Sean Garrett (who also provides backround vocals) penned vocals for the track. The beat blends smooth electric piano with a synth line that has many similarities to David Banner's "Play", also produced by Collipark. The track is generally solid, but the lyrics could have been a little better.

DJ Play A Love Song [feat. Twista] (4/5) - Polow Da Don's down tempo and moody track features Twista with a verse that is pure Twista. Being the second single from the album, the song was very solid and worth every moment. Another favorite.

With You [feat. Snoop Dogg & The Game] (4/5) - The gangsta percussion in the song blends with dark yet nice piano keys surprisingly well. Snoop & Game give excellent verses and Jamie Foxx performs very well on his verses and the chorus. Very good track, definitely worthy of the album.

Can I Take U Home (2.5/5) - Timbaland's extremely interesting instrumental includes dark-sounding harp along with strong strings and a Ginuwine-esque synth reminescent of "Pony". Jamie's vocals were on track as usual, but the lyrics aren't the best, and the production is a little odd. The choir on the bridge is awesome, though.

Love Changres (feat. Mary J. Blige) (4.5/5) - Jamie & Mary KILL it with the vocals on this song. Extremely exceptional job. The song ends up sounding like 90’s R&B (such as old Mary J.), which works extremely well. Second favorite on the album.

Extravaganza (feat. Kanye West) (4/5) - Kanye handles production extremely well and Jamie’s vocals are definitely on point. The lyrics tell an interesting story about a love drunk Jamie who eventually passes out and wakes up at the Embassy with his drunk love-interest... Kanye’s verese is alos good. One of the strongest songs from the album.

Three Letter Word (2/5) - Jamie’s slow vocals fit the mood of the dirty song, as well as the production, but the song definitely isn’t one of the strongest on the
album.

Get This Money (3.5/5) - Another strong song on the album. Production is extremely nice, and the vocals and lyrics are very good, as usual from Mr. Foxx.
The chorus also works well. Generally strong song from the album.

VIP (4/5) Strongest song production wise on the album. Vocals were also very solid, as well as the lyrics. The chorus is well constructed.

Do What It Do (4.5/5) - Although probably one of the dirtiest songs on the album, a great song. Production is very strong, and vocals are awesome. Jamie and Fantasia killed it when they did it live, too...

Storm (Forecass) (3.5/5) - The raunchiness has not diminished, but the song is still generally strong. Good production and vocals mostly.

U Still Got It (4/5) - Common was awesome, and the production was great. The song, though still a little dirty, has other purposes. Good song.

Heaven (5/5) - Best song on the album. Beautiful. There’s not much to be said about it because it’s almost too good for words. It reminds me of “Love Brings Change”, another beautiful song, from “Intuition”. Listen.

Wish U Were Here (4.5/5) - Another great song. One of the strongest on the album. Very nice lyrics and vocals as well as production.

“Unpredictable” has become almost a classic album for me, and I hope it will bring you the same feeling. Enjoy.
