Album Review

On Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom, Cypress Hill sounded a little tired, clinging to their slow, druggy beat a bit too much. The Unreleased & Revamped EP was released a few months after the album, which signals that the EP is an attempt to salvage their reputation. That suspicion is confirmed by the list of remixers and collaborators. None of the guest musicians — from the Fugees and A Tribe Called Quest to Redman, MC Eiht, and Erick Sermon — are traditional West Coast rappers. They are musicians who are pushing the boundaries of hip-hop in 1996. In another attempt to restore their street credibility, Cypress Hill have distanced themselves from the alternative rock audience they cultivated through an appearance at Lollapalooza and with Temples of Boom. So, the group has clearly tried to make a break from its trademark sound, and its attempts are marginally successful. "Boom Biddy Bye Bye," which features a remix from the Fugees, is particularly successful, but most of the EP contains the germs of an idea, not the fruition of one. Still, the EP is encouraging to long-term fans who may have thought that Cypress Hill had lost the plot with Temples of Boom. Unreleased & Revamped suggests they are about to get back on track.

A slower, mind blowing version of temples of boom

This album is awesome if you like III Temples of Boom. It has the same dark feel about it mixed with slow thoughtful beats that made Temples one of their best albums. Track reviews: Boom Biddy Bye Bye-A darker version of the original. New slower beat with new lyrics nothing less than expected from the Hill 4.5/5 Throw Your Hands In the Air-Relaxing beat, classic but new Cypress Hill lyrics 4/5 Intellectual Dons-Same feel as Throw Your Hands In the Air, will put you in a trance 3/5 Hand On the Pump-Above average track, new beat isn't better or worse 3.5/5 Whatta You Know-Dark track about homies turning on you. Highly recommended 5/5 Hits from the Bong-If you liked the original, this one has the same lyrics, but different laid-back beat 3.5/5 Illusions-Would have been one of the best tracks, but is edited clean. Same first 2 verses, has one added verse. Awesome beat that can only be compared with the original beat 3.5/5 Latin Lingo-One of the best tracks, beginning is pretty trippy 4/5 When the Ship Goes Down-Ok song, same lyrics as original, beat isn't better or worse 3/5 The downsides to this is that it's just a compilation of a few new and remixed tracks that haven't made any of their albums. If you don't have more than 2 of their other albums, i don't suggest buying this until you do. Another thing i didn't like was that the Q-Tip remix of Illusions is clean, which is very frustrating to me(if it says explicit next to it, i expect explicit). Disregarding that, the new beat is ok, and it has an added verse at the end. Overall 4/5 (Great)

Hmmm..

This album is ok, but its got like 2 new songs and the rest are just songs that got messed with. P.S.- Temples of Boom is one of the best Cypress Hill albums!

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Cypress Hill were notable for being the first Latino hip-hop superstars, but they became notorious for their endorsement of marijuana, which actually isn't a trivial thing. Not only did the group campaign for its legalization, but their slow, rolling bass-and-drum loops pioneered a new, stoned funk that became extraordinary influential in '90s hip-hop — it could be heard in everything from Dr. Dre's G-funk to the chilly layers of English trip-hop. DJ Muggs crafted the sound, and B Real, with...
