iTunes Review
Nick Lowe established himself in the 1970s as a musician and producer dedicated to keeping strong, energetic, melodic rock n’ roll at the forefront of an industry increasingly turning to fashion. He led pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz, kickstarted Stiff Records with their debut single, produced Elvis Costello, and released powerful solo albums such as Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust. After years of working at a manic pace — and earning the nickname “The Basher” — Lowe slowed down and grew up, learning to croon and enjoy the luxury of having a deep catalog of versatile tunes to perform at whim. This is his first-ever live album, recorded over two tours: 1995 with the Impossible Birds and 2001 with The Convincers. It’s a diverse collection that touches on his later solo albums that were current at the time, six from 1994’s The Impossible Bird and a couple apiece from 1998’s Dig My Mood and 2001’s The Convincer. The centerpiece, however, remains a contemplative keyboard version of “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding,” Lowe’s anthem that gains in resonance with each passing year.

Must Have for Basher Fans
Though the description does little to tell you, this is a live album that appears to have been recorded on the tour that supported the excellent "The Impossible Bird". Sure, you can quibble that some of your favorites are missing ("I Knew The Bride" is my biggest complaint), but the mere inclusion of "Peace, Love and Understanding" makes this worth having. There are several acoustic guitar only versions included, and they are rendered lovingly by this master crafstman. If you are new to Nick's music, better to start with the essential "Labour of Lust" (not available in iTunes, unfortunately, but worth seeking out). If you are already a fan, you'll enjoy this live set.
All Grown Up in Public
Boy, it'd be a different world if all aging rockers grew up as gracefully and suavely as Lowe has. I've caught him live a few times and he's always great. This isn't quite the song list I'd want in a Lowe live collection, but the standouts -- his hair-raising versions of "The Beast in Me," "Faithless Lover" and "What's So Funny," the wonderfully twangy "Without Love" and "Tombstone," and the lounge lizardly "You Inspire Me" -- are all great takes on great songs.
A Live Set from the Pop Messiah's Second Prime
This is an excellent live set by Lowe featuring mostly songs from his post-Rockpile days. Some are solo acoustic versions, some with a tight band that features keyboardist Geraint Watkins, who I believe also takes the lead vocal on "You Inspire Me." The playing is solid throughout and the singing is outstanding. Mr. Lowe is in fine form here, and the songwriting is, of course, sensational. Definitely a musical bargain.
