iTunes Review
Burial’s second full-length, Untrue, doesn’t fall victim to sophomore slump syndrome. In fact, it’s a stunning follow-up to the mysterious dubstep producer’s impressive self-titled debut. The disc feels less grim than its predecessor, but a haunted melancholia dominates throughout. Everything sounds beautifully submerged, murky, fog-bound; it’s easy to picture rainy London or England’s wetlands. Digitally altered vocals play a bigger role than on the earlier release, adding eeriness and dimension to the aquatic textures. When beats appear, they’re strikingly inventive, both in terms of rhythm and timbre. Has there ever been so much funk conjured from such intriguing flatness? You can certainly move to these deeply atmospheric grooves, but the music is also great for dancing in your head. Crackles fleck the aural space as wafting keyboard tones hint at grandeur. Unidentifiable sounds seem to drift down long, dark passageways, pulses bubble up from below, and disembodied voices come and go. Have anonymous cyber-vocals ever been so soulful? The disc has standouts, including “Archangel” and “Raver,” but Untrue’s 50 minutes of watery reverie makes for a great listening experience from beginning to end.

It's true!
"Untrue" is majorly gorgeous. Somehow, it manages to be both lush and restrained, distant and moving. The vocals echo over eerie landscapes of crackles and static, always grounded by soulful bass, though muted as if playing from another dimension. This album is also impressive because it suits both late night hours and the bump of your car. Check it!
A true Artist from the Dubstep Camp
With some 2step beats reminiscent of dubstep pioneer EL-B, Burial joins the select group of dubstep producers to release full albums of orignial songs that hold together as (1) songs, and (2) an album. It is rare to find albums so luscious and artistic in the realms of DJ culture and dance music in general. Its surprising to find albums by dubstep artists because dubstep, being a new genre and "ism" that has its roots in UK Garage and 2step Garage, is not only an underground sound of dance music, but also shys away from vocals and the pop-RnB sound that made some 2step artists such as MJ Cole, go above ground and even be heard on the soil of our United States. In a post grime world the 2step sound has continued on by Burial, notably a fan of EL-B's productions and Ghost Records. Burial's second album "Untrue" is stylisticly similar to brother dubstep producer Boxcutter's first album in that they both take the obsession with sonic landscapes found in dub reggae and dubstep, and twist them in with a post-jungle beat. The stepping beat is noticably present in both producer's works, but alongside a brooding sonic landscape of crackles and vocal samples. Untrue shows signs of being infected with the same dub virus as Hyperdub label's owner, Kode9's recent album. Both conjure sounds that bring a listener into a fantasy world where sound has a physical presence like the moon pulling on our planet's tides. Ambient fans as well as fans of jungle and drum 'n' bass will find something truly infectious about this album. Congratulations Burial and Hyperdub.
Echomusic
Absolutely beautiful, and stunningly effective. It sounds like afterimages, like the emotional aftertastes of something viewed retrospectively. If memories could be distilled into sound.... Loved it. Buy the album Favorites: Archangel, Raver, Near Dark, Untrue, and, though it's not here, the Kode 9 preview mix.
