Album Review

This 1990 debut solo offering from Don Dokken is perhaps the softest, most middle-of-the-road collection in the singer's long melodic rock career. Fans of '80s hair metal certainly count the band that carried Dokken's name as one of the premier outfits of the decade. But when their guitar-slinging histrionics, sad-faced ballads, and colorful outfits became highly unfashionable, the group couldn't sustain themselves through the constant fighting between the singer and guitarist George Lynch. The on-again off-again relationship was off for five years during the early '90s. Lynch made some noise with his own band, Lynch Mob (proving that he could write decent songs without the help of Dokken), and Dokken released Up from the Ashes, a collection of near-balladry. Joining the vocalist on this disc are guitarist/songwriter John Norum (most notable for his work with Europe), guitarist the Billy White, bassist Peter Baltes, and drummer Mickey Dee. The record is well-produced, and the performances (especially Norum's soloing) are quite polished.

The Phoenix rising from the ashes was nothing new...

Yes I know Lynch Mob put out two excellent back-to-back albums. But, do you remember George Lynch's horrendous debacle, "Smoke This." I remember buying the album and unwrapping the plastic with my mouth nearly watering. Within thirty minutes I was entering the doors of a used CD store asking how much they would pay for it. Three dollars was a steal. Well, thankfully Don Dokken did nothing quite as innovative, i.e., lousy. Up From the Ashes was not an attempt at redefining his musical direction; in fact, it should have been another Dokken album. Don Dokken's unwillingness to part with a musical style that was working does not diminish the fact that this is a darn good album. Excellent guitar work abounds, seemingly not missing a riff without George Lynch. Check out the opening number, Crash 'n Burn. Mirror Mirror, Down In Flames, and Give It Up are other rockers worthy of a guitar nod. Then, of course, there are the obligatory ballads. Stay is my favorite because it blends slow and fast tempos so well. 1,000 Miles Away and Forever are two other notable ballads. The only song that could have been left for a B-side selection is The Hunger. The rest of the album is everything one could expect from the lead singer of Dokken.

Don Freakin' Dokken!!!

Only one word comes to mind when I listen to this Cd and that is... PERFECET!!! The song wrting is just the best. Can't wait for his new solo for 2007.

A Great Effort From Don Dokken

When I had heard that one of my favorite bands were going their seperate ways. I wondered what heir solo efforts would sound? But Don Answered that with "Up From the Ashes". If your a fan of the Band DOKKEN you'll love this release. It sounds Just like you'd expect and John Norum does a great job filling the guitar space left by George Lynch!

The lead singer and namesake of 1980s heavy metal band Dokken, Don Dokken (born Donald Maynard Dokken) fueled Los Angeles' metal scene beginning in the late '70s. Although Dokken temporarily disbanded following the Monsters of Rock tour and a multi-platinum album, in 1988 he continued to make his presence felt as a soloist and with the Don Dokken Band, featuring guitarists John Norum and Billy White, bassist Peter Baltes, and drummer Mickey Dee. Re-formed in 1994, Dokken remained as tumultuous as...
