Good Songs, but Badly Over-Engineers

This is the first of two Up With People albums distributed by Buddah Records (of bubble-gum pop fame) under the Pace-Buddah label; the other was the so-far unavailable "Live on Tour" (possibly "Live in Paris") which is a much better set and needs to be re-released in mp3 (...are you listening Up With People corporate?).

The songs in this set continue UWP's transition from folk-based idioms into a harder-edged style. This would be a welcome change except that the Buddah producers so softened the sound by over-use of strings and a really dead sound that doesn't give any feeling of a large group, that it seems Buddah had no idea of what a live UWP performance was all about. The cover of "What Color is God's Skin" seems to be trying to be cute and, as a result, loses the impact of the song.

This album could have been so much better -- a mixed bag at best. Marginally recommended.

The HJ ChuckTim SmithFields

This first non-UWP produced LP marked a radical departure from the music written and composed previously by the Colwell Brothers. Frank Fields assembled this "lead group" that came primarily from Cast A. It included the incredible drumming and vocal talent of Chuck Wansley. I should know because when these great musicians were pulled from the various UWP Casts, I was recruited to replace Chuck as the drummer for Cast A. For me at the then tender age of 17, this was a dream come true, until I saw Chuck play a show at Mason City, Iowa in August 1969. I was absolutely floored by Chuck's incredible talent. The entire show was based on his drumming and at that time unique conducting from the drums style. I quickly realized that there was no way, I could hope to fill his shoes. So I did the best I could. The music was real blast to perform especially my favorite from this show, Ken Ashby's "Live it Live" Enjoy this great music. I also agree with a previous reviewer who stated that the Live version of this music is far superior. I have that swow on Cassette.

Up With People

I played drums for Sing Out Stamford in the early 70's. For a local Sing Out, we had a VERY professional cast. We delivered a positive message and had a great time too! I hope the rest of ther cast finds these albums and enjoys the flood of memories like I did!!

Blanton Belk in response to the growing number of protests and demonstrations spearheaded by the nation's youth. In its original incarnation, the nonprofit included a leadership curriculum and overseas study program in addition to a song-and-dance troupe that spotlighted the talents of performers aged 18-25.
