Album Review

An album title like Urban Angel might lead you to expect a smooth and silky R&B diva, but what you get on the solo debut by Daughter Darling alumna Natalie Walker is actually something more along the lines of a less downtown Syd Straw, or maybe a less British Portishead. The production team of Stur creates arrangements for Walker that manage to give equal weight to her sweet, clear voice and their backing tracks, tracks that are funky and elegant at the same time. The mood is generally kind of glum, but not always completely pessimistic: the title track is sad and lovely, while "Rest Easy" picks up the tempo a little bit while keeping the mood quite subdued. "No One Elsa" combines faintly glitchy beats with a gossamer arrangement of harp, piano, strings and breathy backing vocals to very nice effect, and "Quicksand" incorporates what almost sound like Fripp-ertronic-style guitars. Near the end, on the beautiful "Not the End," Walker's sadness comes with a certain degree of optimism as she gently encourages a downcast friend. Overall, this is a very impressive debut from a major talent. Highly recommended.

I Miss The Depth of Daughter Darling...

by Rapunzel Records

I found Daughter Darling in late 2003 while surfing through CDBaby and have been a fan of Natalie ever since...in fact so much so that I had talked her and her entourage of musicians to travel up to Boston in 2004 to play at a show at The Paradise Lounge for my 40th birthday. It was a show that I will never forgot. To hear her through the marvels of digital recording is one thing to actually hear her live is quite another. She will lift you up effortlessly, let you wallow in mid-air and support you in a cosmic trippy way only she can do...and has ever done. I think if you really want to experience a better production and a better feel for who she is you owe it to yourself to listen to her on Sweet Shadows (Daughter Darling). Honestly, I will listen to anything she puts out there but when it comes down to it DD had more soul.

Nothing Short of Impressive

by deaf_music_lover19

If I ever hear about the Greek sirens bringing sailors to their death by their sweet melodies, Natalie Walker will come to mind, as her voice is nothing short of addicting. The title track is nothing short of gorgeous, with a innocence that makes you want to protect her from the cruelities of the world. But she proves she's seen it all on the heart-wrenching "Circles", which paints a vivid picture of loss. "Quicksand" also laments about loss, this time in the area of love, with a breathy guitar riff and a subdued drum line. But she slowly encourages a downcast soul on "Not the End" and tells them to cherish love on "Rest Easy". The sexy "Waking Dream" is subdued, but no less addicting. With this impressive debut, Natalie Walker has centered her place in the music industry.
