Album Review

On most of these selections, pianist Bob James is in the spotlight, playing with a rhythm section and occasionally a guitar or a sax. The opener, "Choose Me," has James jamming over the chord changes of the blues and gives one hope that this will be one of his more substantial jazz dates. But no such luck. Most of the selections rarely rise above the level of lightly funky background music. Guitarist Earl Klugh drops by for "Fresh Start" and there is a pop vocal feature apiece for Hilary James and Nathan East. Overall, this is easy-listening pop/jazz, pleasant but forgettable.

Bob James is back and strong!!

What a great composer/pianist!! This guy has been rocking for 30 years (Theme from Taxi) and he's still got it. Although his "Fourplay" is one of the best ensembles around, it's nice to see James by himself, with a few more instruments. Not quite so sure about the vocals on this album but all the other cuts are worth every penny!!

Nice but how nice?

Bob James has always been a favorite for contemporary jazz. I'm scared this is not one his finest hours, however it has merit. I hear "Fourplay" in most of the compositions and that's not Bob James. Regardless, "Bobary Coast" and a few others still express his basic former style. I rated it "5" but albums like "Obsession" and "Ivory Coast" is his known signature.

Yo Bob! It's Crackin'(Great)

It is really good to hear from you again Mr.james, I love your music. Great album!!!!!!!!!

Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going with a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes...
