Album Review
Shinedown's 2003 single "Fly from the Inside" blended atmospheric Alice in Chains references with a lumbering post-grunge sound similar to Nickelback. The debut LP Leave a Whisper offered more of the same — a satisfactory sound as rock radio filler, but ultimately pretty calculated. But it became a hit, certainly due in part to radio support, but mostly because of the Jacksonville, FL-based band's reputation as a great live act. The quartet played something like 400 shows over the course of 2003 and 2004, and that gelling process is unquestionably a factor in the more realized hard rock sound of 2005's Us and Them. Shinedown frontman Brent Smith channels Chris Cornell (or at least Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy) on opener "Dream," but the song's grunge theft is forgiven by its airtight groove. Shinedown have been road tested, and they prove it again on "Trade Yourself In" and "Yer Majesty." The band still relies a little too much on formula on Whisper. "Save Me" and "Beyond the Sun" are direct descendants of 3 Doors Down, for example, and at other times they sound like they're aiming for power ballad crossover success. However, Shinedown's sophomore effort is definitely a step forward. They have a rewarding hard rock album in them somewhere.
Customer Reviews
I wish they weren't underrated!!
I went to their concert and I was blown out of my mind. Right after the concert I went and got "Leave a Whisper" and thought every song was amazing. I got this album at christmas and still listening to it every day. My favorite songs has gotta be Heroes, Save me, Trade Yourself In, I Dare You, and Yer Majesty but I can love every single one. I might even go to Atlanta and see them in concert again with Seether on the Sno Core tour!! I even got some other people hooked on this band! I wish they weren't soooo underrated. So if you like Hard Rock this is the band for you! BUY IT!!!!!
Awesome
First of all Shinedown is an amazing live band and they toured for 2 yrs while supporting their first album "Leave A Whisper" which was an amazing debut...now "Us and Them" is a few steps up and wow does it make u wanna rock out i mean i didn't have that high expectations for this album jsut because even though the first album was good i never really like followed them but now man this cd is one of my fav's of the year BUY IT
Rock is NOT Dead
When I first heard Shinedown's remake of "Simple Man," I was quite impressed. The vocals are incredible and the band plays along the same lines. I decided to take a chance and purchase Us and Them after listening to the previews. I'm glad I did. This CD is incredible. These guys are fulfilling the lack of rock 'n' roll and there isn't a song on this CD that I don't like. Try "Begin Again", "Lady So Devine", "I Dare You", and "Heroes" They are incredible songs...
