Album Review

Gary Allan's debut, Used Heart for Sale, is a competent set of neo-traditionalist country that occasionally comes to life, such as on the single "Her Man." Allan's best moments suggest that he is capable of more.

Customer Reviews

A Very Strong Debut Album.

This CD, Allan's first, produced only one hit (Her Man), but it is as good as Allan's more famous releases. It contains five excellent songs. "Wake Up Screaming" is a haunting and unique song written by Jim Lauderdale that will give you night-mares! "Wine Me Up" and "Living in a House Full of Love" are the album's two excellent covers. "Forever and a Day" is a well above average uptempo song, and finally, "Her Man," a great ballad about a backslider who wants to turn over a new leaf. These songs may not have won Allan the recognition that his later work has received, but they cover similar themes and are sung just as well. And like Allan's more recent work, they are mainstream enough to be potential radio hits and yet unique enough to offer something other than the same-old, same-old radio fare. The other five songs are fairly mediocre. Nothing bad, but nothing memorable. Finally, this is very much a mid-1990s country album, and thus it may sound a bit dated to some. But that's not a problem; the five songs mentioned above are as good as any single on the radio today.

What a CD!

Let me tell you every song on this cd is worth the money Gary Allan has a old country voice with a new country sound and any would make a hit on the charts today.

Born: December 5, 1967 in La Mirada, CA

Genre: Country

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Gary Allan hit the honky tonk circuit in his native Southern California at the seasoned age of 12. Playing in and out of the smoky, sweaty bars with his dad's band led Allan to follow in his father's footsteps and start his own band. When Allan returned to those same honky tonks with his own combo, the sound was true Bakersfield country: Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and the rest. Allan spent most of his twenties honing his skills as a new traditionalist country singer; finally, in 1996, he was picked...
