Album Review

On their previous album, Arm's Way, Islands inflated the sweet and quirky sound of their first album, Return to the Sea, into an unwieldy mess of overly ambitious arrangements and overcooked songwriting. On 2009's Vapours, the band and songwriter/vocalist Nick Diamonds have scaled back the sound considerably and delivered an album of mostly straightforward indie rock with enough lyrical and sonic weirdness to keep things interesting. Plenty of vintage synths, cheesy drum machines, and off-kilter arrangements can be heard, as well as songs with the typically strange lyrical imagery Diamonds has dealt out since his days with the Unicorns. What makes Vapours a success, though, is that the majority of the songs have strong melodies and sharp hooks. The lighthearted, easygoing tracks like "Vapours," "Switched On," and "Disarming the Car Bomb" are the easiest to latch onto initially. Diamonds' wispy, intimate voice proves more than enough to handle the demands of being a pop/rocker, and the band has a light touch as it bounces along happily. As you listen to the record, though, it's the tracks with a little more emotional depth that really grab you. Whether it's the vocoder-led ballad "Heartbeat" or "On Foreigner" (which sounds like a Western take on 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" with its twangy guitars and huge vocal harmonies), the restraint of the arrangements and the hushed intimacy of Diamonds' singing allow the songs to sink in. In the past it would have been a stretch to call an Islands song emotionally honest or even affecting, but they pull it off repeatedly on the album. Showing more than a trace of the bombast of Arm's Way, a couple of songs like "Drums" and "Shining" collapse under their own weight and are the only things that keep Vapours from being Islands' best work. Still, this is a welcome return to form for the band.

THEIR BEST YET

Islands has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Return to the Sea was an amazing album that captured all that i loved about the Unicorns with a new twist. It was seriously perfect indie pop, with awesome guitar riffs, great lyrics, and it was just all around catchy and addicting to the ears. Arm's Way was great as well. But it lacked a little bit in the catchy department. They didn't have any songs that i wanted to sing along to. Vapours completely took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting an album as good as this one. It's a mixture of Return to the Sea, the best of Arm's Way, and a new electronic sound. Its the perfect combination. I mean come on, i had no idea Islands would be able to pull of a track with Auto-Tune on it, but Heartbeat is so ridiculously catchy and done so well that it doesn't even phase me. I can't pick my favorites from this album, and thats when you know they have created a phenomenal piece of work. It flows PERFECTLY. theres not a single song on here that i want to skip. I haven't said that since this years Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. its the perfect summer album that just puts me in a great mood. Nick seriously outdid himself. ALL HAIL ISLANDS!!!!!!!

perfect... great job again!

Islands is an incredible band with an incredible story. Their lyrics are ingeniously wound by Nick Diamonds (or now known as Thornburn) and can tell great, intricate stories that can take the listener to places outside of the confines of reality. "Return To The Sea" was the beginning, and was a greatly experimental band for Nick, converting his 3 pieced "Unicorns" into a 7-piece(?) collaboration. Arm's Way saw the departure of Jamie, Island's original drummer, but was still an incredible and beautiful album. Now, Vapours, the third album from islands 4 years, is just as magnificent as the first two albums. Although a bit more poppy, and a bit less experimental, it is still breathtaking, and will very easily be in my "most played" in my iTunes library. If you like Islands, or The Unicorns, or Nick, then buy this album.

Great 3rd album!!!

Every album this band puts out stands out. And not one is the same as the other. Each album is full of creativity. Much respect to these guys. They just keep recording true music for any music lover out there...you know, the REAL music appreciating lover! Islands really are 4ever!

After the breakup of experimental lo-fi indie rock band the Unicorns, members Nicholas Thorburn (aka Nick Diamonds; vocals, guitar, keyboard) and Jaime Thompson (aka J'aime Tambeur; drums) formed Islands, which found the two more focused on brighter production and neo-psychedelic indie pop. Since forming in early 2005, the Canadian band has also featured a fluctuating lineup of contributors on a wide variety of instruments, both in concert and on record. That list includes Alex...
