iTunes Review

Aptly named, The Velvet Underground never achieved mainstream success during their initial tour of duty in the late 1960s. The ensuing years saw their influence deepen and expand among the punk, new wave, no wave and post-punk groups that followed in future decades. This, their 1967 debut, is a monster, powerfully diverse and innovative in every respect. In addition, the album featured German actress and chanteuse Nico on several tracks, “Femme Fatale,” “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” that furthered the group’s exotic appeal. The “Deluxe Edition” includes the mono mix of the album, the five cuts that featured the involvement of Reed, Cale and Velvets’ guitarist Sterling Morrison in the performance and/ or writing from Nico’s Chelsea Girls, her highly recommended 1967 solo LP, and the “single” versions of several album tracks, “All Tomorrow’s Parties” having the most drastic edit, halving the time. The other bonuses are minimal, as “I’ll Be Your Mirror” doesn’t fade and “Sunday Morning” has some miniscule studio talk at the beginning. However, the mono mix should be of consequence to purists who enjoy hearing how the album was mostly heard upon release.

And Then.... The Velvet Underground showed up!

1965: America is grey flannel button down, clean cut and upwardly mobile. . Go to college, get a job, get married, have kids, go for the two car garage. Be a SUCCESS! The Winston Trio, Chad mitchell trio, sing along with Mitch, Lawrance Welk.....nice safe folk music . then the Velvet Underground shows up: Sex, Drugs, Perversions, worse than Ferllingetti or Ginsberg as dangerous as Burroughs! call the vice squad, call the narcos call for help, quickly. THIS IS YOUR NAKED LUNCH CALLING, DONT HANG UP! Hippies were offended ,Beats were offended, and that noize! All that NOIZE! buy this, listen to it, this group and this collection of songs really twisted the mix of the soft machine. what do you have to lose?

Must have album

This is one of the most influential albums of Rock and Roll history. Lou Reed, John Cale, and Nico allong with the rest of the Velvets' provide a unique sound that shouldnt be looked over. Nico's dark, german, dietrich sounding voice is a perfect complement over John Cale's musical arrangements, and Lou's lyrics. On this specially packaged version of the album, there are previews from Nico's first and fab solo album "Chelsea Girl" which comes before her other musical gems "The Marble Index", "Desertshore", "The End", and "Drama Of Exile".

Great Record and the bonus tracks, but...

iTunes needs to fix the review, this is the review for Loaded, the last album, not the Deluxe Edition of the FIRST album. P.S. It's worth the money if you find a physical copy of this.

Biography

Formed: 1964 in New York, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '90s

Few rock groups can claim to have broken so much new territory, and maintain such consistent brilliance on record, as the Velvet Underground during their brief lifespan. It was the group's lot to be ahead of, or at least out of step with, their time. The mid- to late '60s was an era of explosive growth and experimentation in rock, but the Velvets' innovations — which blended the energy of rock with the sonic adventurism of the avant-garde, and introduced a new degree of social realism and sexual...
