Album Review
The success of the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil demonstrated that even an unpopular rock band could have an appealing story (in this case, a true story, as opposed to the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap). There is no comparable cinematic effort on behalf of the Rods, but there could be, since this hard rock/heavy metal trio had much the same career trajectory, managing a handful of albums in the early '80s, none of which sold well enough to make the charts. The last one was 1984's Let Them Eat Metal, which means that Vengeance, the band's reunion/comeback release, is appearing after 27 years. But singer/guitarist David Feinstein, drummer Carl Canedy, and bassist Garry Bordonaro pick right up where they left off, as if they were making an album for 1985, not 2011, release. As before, they play a generic brand of hard-driving metal, with clichéd lyrics full of references to anger and aggression. The words are not only clichéd, they also can be repetitious, as when the chorus of "Rebels Highway," "We'll fight to live free or die," is followed by a song called "Ride Free or Die." Feinstein's cousin, Ronnie James Dio, sits in for a family duet on "The Code," which contains a reference to Nostradamus. But generally the words stick to aggression, from "Madman," a personification of a serial killer, to "Fight Fire with Fire." (By the way, the track list notwithstanding, the sixth track is "Let It Ripp," and the seventh is "Livin' Outside the Law," not the other way around.) There was no reason to expect that, if the Rods ever came back, they would take a different approach, and they haven't. Their fans should be happy for that, but they are unlikely to earn new ones with Vengeance.

The Rods have returned!
an amazing comeback cd from the boys when you are driving through Laconia , Sturgis or Daytona during bike week this is the cd you want. Ronnie James Dio on the Code is great. pick up David Rock Feinstein's new solo effort as well Bitten By The Beast with another collaboration with his bro RJD Metal Will Never Die. RIP Ronnie.
A must have for anyone who loves hard rock
The Rods are an amazing band that has been grossly overlooked since their first album release in 1980. While David "Rock" Feinstein (guitar and vocals) has released some very strong solo albums over the last several years, even they can’t live up the power of Vengeance which is a full frontal assault of hard rock to those who are lucky enough to find themselves listening this amazing album. The fact that Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.) sings on a track is just icing on the heavy metal cake. This is the best that rock n roll has to offer: it’s loud, full of power chords, and has a ton of attitude and aggression. The title of this album could not be more appropriate as The Rods break into the new millennium with a Vengeance.
The Rods ROCK!
The Rods are a band that I've followed since the 80's. I have been waiting (rather impatiently) for this CD to come out, and it has finally arrived and it's GOOD. I was happy to find it on iTunes! The Rods still have that vintage 80's sound, yet some of the songs have a more modern rock flair, such as the song that Ronnie James Dio sings on (The Code). For fans of 80's metal and hard rock, this will be a CD to add to your collection. I also (of course) recommend searching and ordering some of their back catalog, such as The Rods, Wild Dogs, In The Raw, Let Them Eat Metal, etc. - all good, straightforward hard-rocking tunes. Hopefully iTunes will carry some of the vintage RODS albums as well, so that the fans who want to can download digital versions. But in the meantime.....HURRAH, VENGEANCE is ours!
