Album Review

H.I.M.'s eighth album finds them toning down the atmospherics and sheen that were prominent on Dark Light in an attempt to make their heaviest album yet. According to frontman Ville Valo, the ultimate goal was to concoct a sound that combined My Bloody Valentine's Loveless with Metallica's Master of Puppets, and while Venus Doom doesn't quite meet such a lofty goal, it finds them back on track and sounding more metal than ever. There's less ear candy and more prominent riffs in the mix, and some subtle keyboard padding and studio buffing, but the bludgeoning drop-tuned guitars dominate throughout. It's a bigger and badder version of H.I.M. than in the past, and it's largely due to producer Tim Palmer (Ozzy Osbourne, Dredg). Just as the sound of the band has matured, Valo's voice has improved over time, and he experiments with a lower guttural range that fits the mood perfectly. The trademark gloom is as evident as ever within the lyrics and, as always, you can expect to hear the words "suffering," "blood," "misery," and "death" peppered liberally throughout the songs. Of course with lines like, "my heart's a graveyard, baby, and to evil we make love," H.I.M. isn't a band known for profound lyrics, but, at the same time, most fans of the band don't want to philosophize, they want to hear the group rock out, and this release shows them doing precisely that, even harder than before.

Good, but I expected more...

It seems like most people giving this album five stars are all HIM fans who weren't satisfied with Dark Light and see this as their return to the glory days of Love Metal and Razorblade Romance. Having listened to this album in its entirety, I can say that really isn't the case. Don't get me wrong, this album is way better than Dark Light. But from all the hype this album was getting, I definitely expected something better. My main qualms with their previous album was the lack of inspired songwriting and the fact it just wasn't heavy enough. This album attempts to remedy that by making things heavier, and more guitar oriented. The problem with this is that, for me, HIM was never a band that was good because of their guitar, it was a band that was good because they had a knack for blending melody from the keyboards with nice guitar riffs and a soulful vocalist. No album displayed this better than Love Metal. On Venus Doom, it just feels like they focused too much on the guitars. In addition, the lyrics and singing on here just don't rise to the same level of HIM's glory days. What happened to the simple passion of songs like those found on Razorblade Romance? Or the poetic brilliance of those on Love Metal? On this album, the lyrics just feel too simplified, too Dark Light-esque. Despite all these criticisms, this is actually a pretty enjoyable album. The guitar riffs and solos are nice, the choruses are better than those found on the previous CD, and the variety in songs is nice. Overall, however, Venus Doom just doesn't rise to the level I've expected from HIM. From the pre-album hype, I thought this would be their magnum opus, instead, it's HIM's attempt at reclaiming the sound that made them such a notable band in the first place. If you like HIM, you'll enjoy this album, if you're just getting into them, this is actually a pretty good place to start. But if you want to hear HIM at their absolute finest, listen to Love Metal or Razorblade Romance, each is a masterpiece in my opinion. This, on the other hand, is good, but not great.

Top Notch Album!

Venus Doom - The chorus isn't my favorite, but all in all, great song. Love in Cold Blood - Great production on this one. Passion's Killing Floor - What more can I say. Awesome. The Kiss of Dawn - I really like this one. Perfect first single off the album. Sleepwalking Past Hope - This track has the perfect combination of everything in it. It is insanely long, but it is definately worth it to listen all the way through. Dead Lover's Lane - Most up-beat track I think. Love it! Song or Suicide - For only being 1:11 long, this is a whole lot of song. Very passionate, heartfelt, powerful Bleed Well - My favorite off the album. Magnificent Cyanide Sun - Great track. Perfect song to close the album. I was very impressed with Venus Doom. The production/lyrics/instruments/everything clicked. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Way to go boys!

sweet jesus on ice skates!

HIM is back. no more of that ear candy crap like dark light and deep shadows. this brings them back definitely to their razorblade romance brilliance, but with a dash of glv666 and love metal, plus this is actually heavier than their previous work, and longer, the album is almost 50 minutes long. every song stands out, they are all good, this cd rapes anything it touches. i bought the special edition 2 cd one and got the extra remix songs, i reccomend you do the same because the extra songs are really good, especially the dead lovers lane one. anyway, buy the cd, its sick

Finland's H.I.M. One year later, Greatest Love Songs, Vol. 666 solidified their cult status throughout the region.
