Orchestra is superb, singing leaves something to be desired

Studer as Violetta is a disaster. Her voice is better suited for Salome, because her voice sounds light and dramatic in Strauss roles but sounds strained and hardly agile in Verdi and Mozart (why she ever thought she could sing Verdi is beyond me, let alone Mozart). Pavarotti gets nasal in his high notes, get his earlier recording with Sutherland, or better yet get Domingo in the role of Alfredo. The MET orchestra is in top form, and Levine is a stellar conductor in this recording. This was during the time when the MET orchestra was one of the top orchestras in the world, and the top opera orchestra. Buy the preludes, that's all I would recommend.
