Anna and Rolando are amazing!

Don't believe what all these old hags have to say. Opera is meant to change...it is great that there are young people singing and changing the sound of opera. Anna's voice breaks all the "rules" but, it's a good thing. She is a fine singer and electrifies audiences...I was at the MET yesterday so, believe her voice is this good in person! Rolando is exceptional and can bust out high notes like nobody's buisness! I say you support opera and buy this wonderful recording! The other "sopranos you grew up with" are dead...support fine singers!

Not worth the hype, but still great opera

Yes, Salzburg's "La Traviata" was run over by media hype and a heavy marketing machine. Nevertheless, a more than decent performance came out of it. Considering that Netrebko and Villazon are still early in their careers there is no use of comparing them to past greats. The future will show if their fame should last. Personally, I believe Rolando Villazon stands out as an engaging Alfredo, his voice and his timbre very accurately reflecting the emotional upheaval in his character. (Much better than anything Luciano Pavorotti ever sang.) Villazon makes for a very passionate and believable Alfredo. The harsh criticism of Anna Netrebko I cannot follow either. She sings a very credible Violetta, finding the right tone for each scene. One should not ignore that she does have a beautiful voice and considerable dramatic talent. Both performers sing their roles accurately, which is more than I can say for the last performance of "La Traviata" I saw on stage, and believably. Netrebko's voice definitely doesn't sound like a traditional Italian soprano, but I personally find this very refreshing. The overall performance strikes a good ballance between beautiful sound and conveying the character's emotions. Hence, I can only recommend this recording of "La Traviata" and think much of the harsh criticism unwarranted.

Mr. Bean and a Geisha don't cut it!

Not an ounce of voice worth hearing here. DO NOT BUY THIS! No soul, no technique, no timbre. Get the just re-released recording with Caballe, Bergonzi and Milnes. It is by far the better and contains no cuts, so it is the entire opera. Caballe - amazing! Bergonzi is steady and offers a musicanship and attention to rhythm that overcomes a vocal timbre which scores only a 7 or 8 out of 10 (Villazon is a 4 or 5) and truly makes his performance exciting - listen to the recit of his first aria. Milnes sounds a a little young, but he is amazing. That is a truly world-class baritone - the facility witht he top is legendary. I have not even taken the time to see who sings on this one - it is so stripped of color. DONT BUY THIS!
