iTunes Review
After their debut album proved an alternative band needn’t be ugly and abrasive, nor discard a love for pop music, glamour and overt sexiness to be successful, Garbage decided to gently tweak the formula for their follow-up. Devised by three Midwestern recording engineers — most notably Nirvana producer Butch Vig on drums — who understood how to get a massive sound onto tape, Garbage carefully treaded the line between the music’s natural tension and the automated computer perfection that was within their technologically over-educated reach. Edinburgh-based singer Shirley Manson not only serves as this band of tech geeks’ human image and focal point, she serves to humanize their music as well. Drum loops and expertly edited guitar and keyboards tend towards the cold and impersonal, but with Manson adding her alluring and emotionally ambivalent pipes to well-written tunes such as “I Think I’m Paranoid,” “Temptation Waits” and “Push It,’ the band came to represent a beating heart in danger of being crushed by the computer age.

Best pop album of the 90's
I will never forget the first time I heard Paranoid! Living in Colorado in '99 or '00, I didn't have TV and had stayed away from the radio for a while. I was at the Hard Rock Cafe in Denver with a friend when this song came on along with the video on their big screen, and I knew immediately that it was Shirley! Man, what a video and a song. I was hooked, so I went out that day and bought the album, and it has been in my rotation since. In particular, it is my favorite gym music since it is mostly up tempo. As with their first album, the social commentary is sharp here. Paranoid, Sleep Together and Medication all are strong songs that deal with the modern attitudes and problems. Good music and good lyrics on most songs make this one of the strongest pop offerings of our time.
Garbage has never done and album better than this.
Version 2.0 is what caused Garbage to be the huge icon they where in the late 90's. There is a huge consentration of awesome songs on this album. Temptation Waits, I Think I'm Paranoid, When I Grow Up, Special, Push It, and the Trick is to Keep Breathing are the classics here.
Wonderful Album, beginning to end.
One of the truly great records made during the late 1990's before all the bubble gum poppy sounds infested the music landscape. Four obvious hits: Push It, I Think I'm Paranoid, Special, and When I Grow Up (featured in Adam Sandler's "Big Daddy"), which will always have a home in Alternative mainstream. However this album is one of those where you can listen from the begginging to end, and not even realize it. The 1st track, Termptation Waits, sets the tone for Shirley's angst, while The Trick is to Keep Breathing and You Look So Fine are underrated gems.
