ok but not fabulous like Verve Remixed 2
i bought this album because I LOVE Verve Remix 2. I had high expectations that weren't met. The previous review mentions techno (people overuse the term techo to mean anything with an electronic beat) the Verve remixes do not have any techno. There's a variety of styles used in these remixes from common dance beats, jungle, drum n bass to rock, but the skillful blending of the old and new is not present across the board. Best tracks I'd get instead of the whole album would be in this order: Sing, Sing, Sing (RSL Remix) (i give 5 stars for that one). Also The Gentle Rain (RJD2 Remix) Yesterdays (Junior Boys Remix) & Lilac Wine (The Album Leaf Remix). I love nina simone but this first track is awful. It slaps you right away with a sappy annoying holiday sounding jingle that makes me recall an old macys commercial at xmas time or being stuck in a mall having to endure a cheesy loop. i do look forward to future Verve compilations though.
Verve Remixed 1 and 2 are a lot better
If you're looking for a more downtempo flavor as 1 and 2 are, this isn't it. These remixes are getting too "clubby" for a lack of a better term. At least this album may expose the club-scene to some classic jazz. Some of the songs get really annoying after a couple of listens to where you delete them (or hide them) from your library. Too repetitive on the beat and for most songs, the DJ's overlay just doesn't sound right for the original: "Fever" has been transformed from the sexy, smooth tune that it is to some be-boppy bounce tune. And Carl Craig is borderline, although I adore Hugh Masekela. As for the Peter Gunn tune-what was Max Sedgley thinking? That's all I say about that. Maybe my criticisms are an artifact of my knowing (and having) many of the original songs from the jazz artists featured (which actually made most songs on Verve Remix 1 and 2 extremely enjoyable) but in my opinion, there's some real mis-matches going on here so knowing the original tune may work against your liking this album. Here are some other notables: Bent does an excellent job with the Billie tune. The Postal Service takes me back to those 80s Casio disco-days, and I only hit the tail-end of those-yuk. That's a real pity because the original Nina song is so nice; the Shirley Horn mix, despite its clubbiness, is apropos "Come DANCE with me...", so it works to have that strong rhythm with it. The RJD2 mix is quite nice as well, but if you're not used to RJD2 you have to listen to it more than once to really "get" what he's doing. The RSL mix is complex, more on the fusion-jazzy trip --that match is good, as is the Lyrics Born mix. Album Leaf tune is not terrible, but just boring to listen to and gets in the way of Nina's sultry voice with the little electronic squeaks and tweaks and the constant, monotonous e-beat. Junior Boys mix is interesting-rich in sounds that are creative and well-placed. Diplo isn't one of my favorites anyway, also too much of the Casio-keyboard sound, but it's clearly just a personal preference as I'm surprised how much this 80s Casio-keyboard sound (push-button rhythms) is coming back. I don't mean to pick on Casio, but I just remember that the big thing to get for Christmas if you were a "musician" in the mid-to-late 80s was a Casio keyboard... I believe those were some of the darker days of music (the origin of elevator music, so that should tell ya), which I _thought_ have become popular out of nostalgia rather than content (think Human League hits or Yaz's "Don't Go" both annoying 80s classics that I love and own, but can't listen to for more than 10 minutes). But given this album, maybe that kind of e-music is making the rounds again... Let's hope for not too long. If you're considering this as your first step into the Verve Remix series, I'd recommend you first check out 1 or 2. Both are good and there are only a few throw-away songs on those...
