Album Review

This ten-track compilation is not really the best of Gary U.S. Bonds; it's the best of the material he recorded during his early-'80s comeback. It has tracks from the Dedication and On the Line albums (including the hits "This Little Girl" and "Out of Work"), as well as previously unreleased live 1981 versions of a couple of his '60s hits ("New Orleans" and "Quarter to Three").

Customer Reviews

Finally on iTunes: Quarter to Three

The album notes as of the date of this review are not correct; these songs are the real deal, the great danceable hits of Gary U.S. Bonds from the early 60s. Don't expect stereo, fidelity, balance, multi-tracks or any other refinement in these recordings, just good solid rock'n roll fun. Springsteen was a big fan and used Quarter to Three as his closing number for years. All the hits and then some. Good job iTunes.

GREAT CD [IGNORE "ALBUM REVIEW" ABOVE]

These are all the ORIGINAL Gary U.S. Bonds' hits 1960-1962, while the above "Album Review" is for some other CD [also available on itunes]. What does the "Album Review" get wrong? This CD is NOT ten tracks, it was NOT recorded during the early 1980's, it does NOT feature any songs from the "Dedication" or "On The Line" albums, and it has NO unreleased live 1981 songs. Otherwise, the Review is dead-on! Don't let the faulty info deter you: if you're looking for all the classic Gary Bonds' hits, you've come to the right place!

A Rock Icon gets his due

So thankful that the original hits are here. This stuff is engraved in my gray matter forever. So be it... There's some astonishing sonic gumbo here that can't be imitated or duplicated with any digital twidling - no matter how hi-tech. Got to say though - this stuff has been well-scrubbed and is clearer than I remember it. It's this tribal fusion accomplished with such primitive studio gear that is the essence of rock 'n roll. I remember seeing a photo of the Motown recording "studio" in the Sixties. The launch pad for scores of epic songs was so bleak, low-tech and unexciting. It was the artists that produced those tunes who made the difference - not the equipment. That's the genius of Gary U.S. Bonds - an artist in his community who's just making his music.

After moving to the Norfolk, VA, area in the mid-'50s, young Gary Anderson began plying his vocal wares, first in church, later with a local group called the Turks. When he was not yet 21, he was approached by local record producer Frank Guida to join his tiny Legrand label. Guida changed Anderson's name to U.S. Bonds, hoping the first release would get extra airplay by disc jockeys mistaking it for a public-service announcement. The result was the classic "New Orleans," combining rock-combo raunch...
