iTunes Review
One of those obvious ideas that not everyone could’ve pulled off, the Pogues’ meld of Irish traditional music and spitting punk-rock energy led to some of the most striking and startling music of its era. This 21-track collection pulls classics from albums such as Rum, Sodomy and the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God for a jukebox-ready crash course. Alongside tales of drunkenness (“Streams of Whiskey”), the aftermath of war (“The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”), dead-end living (“Dirty Old Town”) and more drunkenness (“A Rainy Night in Soho”) sit jubilant hops like “London Girl” and the bittersweet seasonal favorite “Fairytale of New York” with singer Kirsty MacColl. The Pogues’ attitude, smarts and sound continue to echo through the likes of the Dropkick Murphys, but their Very Best makes clear that the original is hard to beat.
Customer Reviews
Are you Kidding this is awesome.
Shane MacGowan and The Pogues are the most over looked band of the 20th century. The album is worth every penny.
Best of the Best of
I normally avoid 'Best of' albums like the proverbial, mainly because whoever compiles them has a totally different idea of what the 'Best of' is than I do - "if in doubt, pick those that sold the most" seems to be the usual motivation (which is how we end up with Maggie May on every Best Of Rod the Mod album - dreadful song but it sold lots of copies). But for once it seems that the powers that be have got it right - a terrific collection of songs by the best Irish band ever (stuff U2 & Onob sell-outs).
Outstanding Music. Outstanding Value.
One of the best bands of the 1980's... and one of the best contemporary Irish bands ever (second only to U2). You need to listen to this amazing mix of punk, Celtic, and dirty ol' rock and roll.
