Album Review

Chronicling the Samples first five years, this best-of counts 17 of the Colorado outfit's finest early numbers. Steered by Sean Kelly, the jam band movement's answer to Sting, this compilation launches with what still may be the group's most memorable tune, "Feel Us Shaking," an expansive, reggae-tinged homage to environmentalism. A similar vibe permeates "My Town" and "Waited Up," tunes that almost measure up to the set-opener. Glistening, damn near inspirational numbers like "Little Silver Ring" and "Did You Ever Look So Nice" prove what a fine pop band the group became, even if the mainstream music world wasn't listening. An important reminder that before Dave Matthews and Big Head Todd & the Monsters, the Samples were out there paving the way as far as underground college rock bands go. For some, this is an enjoyable bit of nostalgia — housing a bonus DVD with four videos, a documentary and additional audio tracks — but for those looking to catch up, this is an exhilarating place to start. ~ John D. so underrated...

arguable the MOST UNDERRATED band of all time. listen and get hooked.

You will get hooked on this band!

They never got the recognition they deserve! If you haven't listened to their music, you must try it now! My favs: Weight of the World, Still Water and, of course, Little Silver Ring. My college roommates and I went to see them in Boulder in '95 and the band pulled myself and another girl up on stage, they put the bass guitar strap around my neck & I got to "rock" with them!! They are awesome & will always be one of my favs! This is really a great mix of their best!! Oh and When the Day Is Done... love it! I have all their CD's in the orig cardboard cases!

Retroactive!

I was introduced to this band as a post eighties new wave/pre-goth/alternative/indie/reggae audiophile. I saw them first in Ithaca, NY and reveled in what I was hearing. It made the hair on my neck stand on end. They are amazing, honest, and love to involve the fans (and two of my friends on-stage). Get this album, but start buying their early work now.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

With their relaxed, slightly jazzy pop, the Samples were one of the most popular touring bands of the early '90s. After a bad experience with a major label, the band began releasing their own records independently, building support through a grassroots network of fans. Through constant touring, the Samples were able to keep building their network of fans. They were also busy in the studio, recording three albums between 1992 and 1993. With none of their albums deviating from their folky, Sting-meets-the...
