Album Review
Usually, it's not a good sign if a band is generally known for augmenting artists instead of their own records, but Tower of Power was really a very good horn section, and they did make records that held their own. Of course, "What Is Hip?" was the biggest single they ever had, but they also had several other smaller hits that captured their sleek, stylized soul-funk quite well, such as "Soul Vaccination." Pretty much all of those songs are captured on Rhino's 2001 anthology The Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years, which spans 16 tracks and contains almost all the highlights of their '70s records. Yes, the 1999 double-disc set What Is Hip? is more comprehensive, but that's really for serious listeners. For listeners that want a lean dose of the TOP's prime, this is the best collection on the market.
Customer Reviews
Most of the funky stuff, but missing a few titles
And I agree, David Garibaldi is THE funkiest, baddest drummer that ever was! Check him out behind Chester on "Squib Cakes", off "Back To Oakland". If that isn't a drum solo to study, I can't think of what is. How he plays around the beat but stays spot-on is amazing. The 'Lenny' years were the best, I'd prefer a better selection of tunes. But, in their heyday, T-O-P was THE BEST, bar none. Tight? Yes, Indeed! Tasty? Give me some more of that East Bay Grease!! What Is Hip? T-O-P
America's Finest
The "official" ITunes review to the left is faint praise indeed; don't be dissuaded from checking out one of the best bands ever. This is music from the days when funky grooves came from great musicians playing great songs. Human rhythm beats drum machines every time, and here's the proof. For three decades and counting, these guys have set the standard. When they come to town, every musician who's not working is right down front -- ears wide open, watching like a hawk.
Bad review
Was the person at All Music like 20 years old? To say that T.O.P. was more famous for backing up other groups shows the ignorance of youth, or at least a product of the 80's. Go watch their 1973 performance on Soul Train, and don't minimize their contribution to the music world.
