At its core, Vheissu is a textbook case of modern-hard circa 2005: careful, layered production that marshals power with bludgeoning, steamroller rhythms, crunchy distorted guitars, and waves of vocals that harmonize or chant in unison, expressing rage, discontent, and an earnest belief in a better world. Ballads are over-dipped in melodrama (“Atlantic”) and rockers are tweaked to the boiling point (“The Earth Will Shake”). Yet this Orange County quartet has reached beyond the usual stylistic cues for their fourth studio album. Producer Steve Osborne (Massive Attack, U2) used the spacious live room at Bearsville Studio in upstate New York to ensure that the group didn’t merely end up with a sanitized, disconnected slab of digital technology. Instead, Osborne has pushed forth a band desperate to reach anthemic heights. “For Miles” ripples with grandiose dreams as it peels off its sonic layers. However, the band still has a ways to go before they completely lose their “shredder” tag, as the generic attack of “Hold Fast Hope” points out.

Pretty exceptional

I love this cd. The music and lyrics are intelligently written yet original. The guitarists (and bassist and drummer) have toned it down a bit wiwth the showing off, which many would perceive as a bad thing, but it sounds more mature to me. Here we go: 1) Image of the Invisible - 6/10 - Least favorite song on the album, period. It's not bad, I just think its a bit repetitive. 2) Between the End and Where We Lie - 9/10 - Love the drum beat in this song. The transitions are very well done. 3) The Earth Will Shake - 8/10 - Very heavy. Mostly screaming, but the part he sings is extremely catchy. It's like a freaking mining song. 4) Atlantic - 10/10 - Wow. Beautiful catchy slow song. Great bells and synths and such. (Cool time signature, too) 5) For Miles - 9/10 - Great song. The whole song builds from a very nice piano part to a very heavy end - extremely catchy. This song is very musical throughout: great piano and guitar skills, not to mention songwriting. 6) Hold Fast Hope - 8/10 - Very heavy, pretty much the only singing is "hoooold faaaast hoooooope!" which gets stuck in your head so freaking quickly. (its in 7/8 and 5/8 time signature, soooo sweet!) 7) Music Box - 10/10 - My favorite song on the cd. The chorus is so catchy! There's some cool music box and some very original chord progressions, as well. It's great. 8) Like Moths to Flame - 8/10 - pretty good stuff here... I think the beginning is in the music video for Image of the Invisible. The chorus sounds exactly like deftones. 9) Of Dust and Nations - 8/10 - fast paced and a lot like the old Thrice in some parts. Very cool drum beat. Great guitar too. Great everything. 10) Stand and Feel Your Worth - 7/10 - I'm sure if you listened to this song a lot, you would grow to like it. It is extremely interesting, a lot of crazy changes in styles and stuff. My qualm is it's not very catchy... 11) Red Sky - 10/10 - The perfect closing song - It's soooo good... Some great falsetto, beautiful singing which is unusual for Thrice. This album is pretty darn good. I'm a fan. If you like this cd, you need to check out Finch "Say Hello to Sunshine." In my opinion these two albums are very similar and two of my favorites. Finch is probably a bit weirder, but still really good.

Change is Good

Thrice has grown and changed over the past years and albums, and VHIESSU shows the maturity that the band has gained. While many fans of the old albums (I am one of them, diehard) may find the album to be too jarring, Thrice made a gamble when switching producers, and it shows in the music. Fortunately, everything has paid off. The lyrics exhibit the increased maturity of the band, everything is more musical, and the vocals are constantly improving. Thrice has done it again with VHIESSU, but in a different way, and has pulled it off.

Brilliant!

This album, so different from their previous ones establishes them as true artists not bound by any single vantage point. They forge their own path like seasoned musicians and the result is a 5 Star Album

The post-hardcore quartet Thrice formed in 1998 in Irvine, California. Guitarist/vocalist Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge all knew each other from high school and the neighborhood skate park, and the usual round of practices, music competitions, and local gigs helped hone their new band's sound.
