iTunes Review

Browse the cutout bin of any record store and you’ll be sure to find it clogged with unwanted offerings from the offspring of talented musicians. But this debut album from Vieux Farka Touré, the preternaturally talented son of late Malian guitar maestro Ali Farka Touré, deserves a better fate. Vieux possesses an astonishingly subtle guitar style whose sinuous fluidity feels like a legitimate progression from Ali’s dust blown fingerpicking. He's clearly mastered the dry desert sound that his father pioneered but he's not content to linger in his shadow, occasionally incorporating driving 4-4 rhythms, and reggae tempos that point to Vieux’s past as a percussionist. He cut his teeth as an instrumentalist backing renowned Malian guitarist Toumani Diabaté, and Diabaté lends his dexterous fingerpicking, and painterly chords to a number of the album’s best tracks. Indeed, Diabaté’s contributions are only eclipsed by the presence of Ali Farka Touré himself on the loping “Tabara” and the frenetically percussive “Diallo”. Hearing Ali and his son trade serpentine lead runs with one another is a truly breathtaking experience which proves beyond doubt that Vieux is a worthy heir to his father’s formidable talents.

a great vieux

simply put, this is an amazing album...each track offers its own exciting energy and has its own character, that add up to a refreshing and invigorating listening experience. the record is distincly west african in its sound, but at the same time very accessible and catchy to the western ear...truly a must have.

Album of the year?

There is so much life these days in the Mali music, it's quite inspiring that so many people in Mali are inspired by creativity, and in turn create a positive improvement of their culture. From start to finish Vieux's debut recording will be know as a classic. It's hard to say what the highlights are because there are many (pretty much every track except "Sangare"). "Courage" was awesome because it fused a new style - rock/blues/Malian into a cohesive whole. "Ana" (which has a nice music video), is reggae beautifully done, with horns, organ, multi layered vocals. There are two songs done with Tounami Diabate. The final track "Diabate" is relaxed and contains a spiritual vibe. But of course the songs with his father, Ali Farka Toure, are worth the price alone. Ali was hardly able to walk, and his guitar has to be placed in his lap. This makes the up-tempo "Diallo", that much more emotional. Soon before Ali passed this life, his listened to his's son's album in his sickbed, exclaiming "That's my son!". It easy to see why Ali was proud. Music and life are well...

Excellent Debut Album, Exciting New Artist

VFT may the the most exciting artist emerging in world music this year. Vieux not only benefits from the distinguished pedigree of his father Ali Farka Toure, the album demonstrates that he's ready to develop African music through the fusion of traditional and modern styles. The net result is a well put together album and great listen. I'm very excited for VFT's upcoming U.S. tour, and would definitely recommend the album to all.
