Album Review
For his third date for Steeplechase, trombonist Vincent Gardner not only omits a second horn, but also utilizes guitarist Tom Guarna in place of a pianist, with bassist Greg Williams and drummer Quincy Davis rounding out the band. The result is solid effort that swings like mad. Gardner, who has recorded with Marcus Roberts, Wynton Marsalis, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, opens with a fluid arrangement of Nat Adderley's "Teaneck," while also mastering Charlie Parker's intricate, rapid-fire bop vehicle "Koko." His laid-back treatment of Duke Ellington's infrequently performed blues "Rocks in My Bed" is complemented by Williams' walking bass and Guarna's spacious accompaniment in an extended workout. Gardner adds a mute for the intimate setting of Wayne Shorter's "Wildflower," a beautiful, subdued performance. The standards include a lush, romantic setting of "For Heaven's Sake" and breezy interpretation of the always popular "Just One of Those Things," helping to nicely round out this recommended session.

Slidin' and Glidin'
Finally, an IiTunes release for one of Jazz at Lincoln Center's finest! A real pleasure for a summer's afternoon...from the opener Teaneck to an infectious KoKo and lovely Just One of Those Things. The trombone is here in the hands of a master. Please keep releasing more from Wynton's fine assemblage at JALC. Thanks, Vin, a real winner!
Vin-Slindin' into home base...
On this third recording date with Steeplechase Records, Mr. Gardner delivers a stellar performance with and all-start cast of musicians. This album showcases, as always, the extraordinary arranging skills of Mr. Gardner, but more so delivers a powerhouse punch of great tunes mixed with phenomenal musicianship and ridiculously good solos all around. Performing Nate Adderley's "Teaneck", Freddie Hubbard's "Pensativa", and Charlie Parker's "Ko Ko" on this album displays a wide range of tastes and speaks to how disciplined and incredibly intelligent "Vince" aka "Mr. Gardner" is when selecting charts. This album is a great pick for those just starting on the path of jazz and an even better selection for those musicians out there looking to hear some really good music to listen to. This album comes sliding into home base with a five star rating.
