Album Review

It would be easy to suppose that more than one guitarist is at work on many of the tracks on Pierre Bensusan's appropriately named album Vividly. Those two or three string players would have to be unusually intuitive, however, reading each other's minds in real time. Bensusan is sometimes playing three separate parts in a couple of different time signatures. In fact, it's amazing he never gets his fingers tangled. The effect is a textured guitar sound, as Bensusan interweaves the different sections, quickening and slowing, playing complexly and then simply. By varying the dynamics and the time, he is consistently surprising, yet always satisfying. As if that weren't enough, he also sings on every other track, usually in French, though "The In-Between" is a love song rendered in lightly accented English. After working alone for most of the disc, he adds a band and other singers for the closer, "Les Places de Liberté," making for the liveliest moment on what has already been a vivid collection.

Continuing explorations of a master

Pierre Bensusan is a virtuosic fingerstyle guitarist and following on his recent Inuite and Altiplanos recordings, this album continues to demonstrate his mastery. Writing in Acoustic Guitar (Feb 2011), Senior Editor Teja Gerken captures the essence, stating "(t)unes such as "Kiss Landing" and "DADGAD Cafe" are simply as good as contemporary fingerstyle guitar gets in terms of composition, chops, tone and virtuoso execution." Pierre has a distictive "voice" on the instrument, something much more lyrical than most of his contemporaries. This comes through on songs including "Astres & gnomes" where single note lines, chords and harmonics are blended with precision and beauty. His ability to bend the pitch while chording creates an amazing ambiance and blends chords and single notes into fluid phrases. His vocal abilities (singing) have also matured to the point of seemless integration with the guitar. These two complementary voices are demonstrated on "Le chien qui tourne" in particular. In summary, while this album is still new to me, so far I think it is as good as Altiplanos and has moments equaling my favorite work on Intuite. I'm starting with four stars, but as I listen further it may go to five...

Don't waste your money!

Pierre Bensusan is simply one of the finest guitar players in the world, and this collection proves it. Highly recommended.
