This Is A Collection Of Outtakes From Carpenters Albums

This album was released the same year Karen passed away, 1983. Karen's last recording, "Now", was recorded in the spring of 1982 and is only a work lead. The title was completed after her passing, along with a few other tracks in this collection that needed "sweetening." "Sailing On The Tide" is the only totally finished song, recorded for "Horizon," which explains Karen on backing vocals. "Make Believe It's Your First Time" with it's lilting country feel, was "covered" by Richard and Karen, this song was originally recorded for Karen's solo, Richard liked it, re-recorded the song because Karen's solo was shelved, and this version, intended for "Made In America," recieved the same fate; Karen's performance here is the work lead. "Make Believe It's Your First Time" was a single from this set and had moderate airplay. "Ordinary Fool" harkens back to 1976 and is an outtake from "Kind Of Hush." If released on that album, this song would have certainly changed the feel of that album and would have charted a new direction in the Carpenters career. It's been said Ella Fitzgerald wanted to cover this "saloon" style torch song but out of respect for Karen, passed. "Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore" features Richard perfoming the backing vocals with lots of reverb and way down in the mix, it gives this big budget style huge ballad a much more open feeling and would have been a bigger hit if included on "Made In America." It's the second single from this album and recieved moderate airplay. "Your Baby" is one of my favorite tracks. Karen loved Broadway style songs and "Look To Your Dreams" sounds a bit like her wedding song. This title was recorded before her wedding song, it wasn't released but Karen never forgot it.

Fantastic, high-quality recording!

I purchased this recording when it first came out in 1983 and still, to this day, find the recording flawless. Karen's singing, the instrumentation, the crystal-clear quality of the recording, all make this recording ageless. I applaud Richard Carpenter for continuing the legacy and for sharing the hidden gems.

Voice of a Gem

I remember hearing this album for the first time. I was only a new carpenter fan just listening to their songs. I, being born in 1972, had little to know much of the brother and sister team. I knew very little songs from them growing up. I remember "Touch me, when were Dancing". Sing (from seseme street really), and that was about it. I remember going to purchase the double LP of Yesterday Once More in 1990. I was hooked!!!! I wore out the brand new lp until I had to convert to CD, learning every song by heart. It was not until I decided to get all and hear all the Carpenter's songs/album. I then bought this album at a yard sale one day. I could wait to get it home. I found the songs I loved and had meaning to them as well. Now is a very very strong song with a great deal of meaning. Sailing on the tide is another. now that I have heard ALL the albums over and over again, I can tell the difference in Karen's singing in this album VS say (They Long to be) Close to you. I can hear a more mature Karen in her singing in this album then that album. Dont get me wrong love ALL the albums. It is (on the same token) the same pitch and hormony as Karen puts her magic to these songs. If Karen had lived even 10 more years, they might have been up there in popularity as say ABBA, or Elvis. Karen IS the Queen of love songs. What a wonderful collection for a die hard Carpenter's fan, but maybe not for the fresh or casual one. Either way this collection deserves to be heard at least once. I listen to them ALL the time. It is just good music to relax to and undwind.
