Voices
There is something haunting and comforting all at once about these two offerings from Nate Grace and Pure Ecstasy. Voices is my favorite of the two songs; the stripped down lyrics and insistent vocal style layered over a ripple of guitar chords makes it a tune that I love playing on the back deck, letting the reverb wash over me and relaxing into the depth of this music. I've got an outdoor sound system that really meets all of my musical needs-- it better, because it's pretty much the only thing in my life that resembles a luxury (Bose 251 outdoor expansion package with AL8 wireless link). My musical tastes are pretty eclectic but I have to say I keep returning to this tune over and over. I have run across Grace more than once on the Austin scene. He's had an interesting musical journey and I have been impressed with his thoughtful lyrics and musicianship as he's experimented with a fair range of musical styles. Will be interesting to see where he takes this sound. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Pure Ecstasy.

Well, it's pretty good dreamy alternative pop, however, all that distorted sound, which sounds like it was recorded underwater with a cheap walkman, it gets old. It's fine to have a few songs like that, but when your signature sound is just distortion, well, that ain't music in my book. It's a cheap excuse for either not being able to write real music, or not being able to hire a sound engineer. Take your pick. But I don't buy the "that's our sound" or "it's in fashion" arguments.
