Album Review
Released through mp3.com, Voices is a four-track EP by Massachusetts-based one-man band Mountain Mirrors. Jeffrey Sanders sings and plays all guitars, bass, and drums in this heavy psychedelic rock project. "Field of Grass" is hard-knocking stoner rock, inspired but not striking. The title track is a collaboration with Vine Sweetland on tambura. The Indian feel recalls the Holy River Family Band — so do Sanders' drugged vocals. "Eclectic Caravan" and "Wash Me Away" take more of a prog rock approach to the psychedelic genre, the latter also adding a distinctive blues-rock flavor. The cocktail goes down very well and shows promise, if only Sanders could get a real band together — the multi-tracking seems to limit the power the music can convey while giving it a D.I.Y. feel it could do without. For example, the electronic drum patterns in the last song strip away the evocative power of the tribal percussion.
