VOLUME: BLUE Sol

     

This is an amazing recording. Sol is just brilliant. I've listened to this so many times. I love the many layers of the recording, and especially the multi rythyms, and loops used. I especially like Gotta Have Rain. I met Sol and blind Cootie Stark at the Mississippi Blues Festival several years ago (where I played as a duo with the Regal Queen of the Blues: Shirly Lewis). Cootie and Sol played at one of the outdoor stages, on a hot July afternoon. I heard Cootie tell a great story about how he got his first guitar. I think he was in his late 80's or 90's when he told this? Cootie grew up on a farm down south out in the country. He made his first guitar starting with some kind of wooden box that was lying around. then he took a 2 x 4 and cut it to the right size for a neck, and put in some kind of frets. He then chased a horse down and took a bunch of tail hairs, and somehow attached them to his creation and there was his first guitar!!! He said he later begged his mother for one at a local store, and she finally got it for him.
