iTunes Review

While Nirvana was reaping the decidedly mixed, tragically short-lived blessings of massive mainstream success, Pearl Jam went about steadily building the '90s most consistently successful rock career. Their 1993 sophomore collection initially underscored the band's disdain for traditional music biz trappings (being released with no singles or videos to support it), yet still soared immediately to the top of the charts and went multi-platinum. The opening salvos of "Go" and "Animal" quickly thrash expectations that this will be but a continuation of the often arena-friendly charms of their debut, while singer Eddie Vedder wears his sociopolitical obsessions firmly on his sleeve on the anti-gun "Glorified G" and "Blood." Yet Pearl Jam also leavens the thrash with the forceful acoustic intrigues of "Daughter," an emotionally warmer side of the band that's also showcased on "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter In a Small Town" and the haunting, elegiac closer, "Indifference."

Insanely good album.

Ten was such a good album, but to have a follow up album like this? Genius. This has so many amazing songs on it, and some almost better than ten. Go, Animal, and Daughter are perfect ways to start off this album. Dissident and Rearviewmirror are such classics, really showing off pearl jam's music writing talents. Elderly Woman behind the counter in a small town is also amazing. I was so glad to come accross this album when searching through our family's cd collection. It is by far my favorite pearl jam album, and one of my favorite altime records, as well. It truly showcases what a wonderful band pearl jam is.

I grew up listening to Pearl Jam, Ten is my favorite album, but Vs. is definately on par with the material presented on Ten.
Go is an excellent opener for the album, I especially like the rhythm section. Animal and Daughter are both cool songs, and both earned well deserved spots on the Rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits). Glorified G is okay, but the anti-gun lyrics are what make it for me. Dissident is nice, Eddie really belts it here, his voice has always been piercing, one of the best in rock/alternative, and Dissident serves as one of the many examples. W.M.A is an AMAZING song, once the looped drumming introduces the song u know ur in for a treat, the instrumentals are jamming, and Eddie and his voice just scream out all of the injustice that occurs in the world today. Blood's a great song, the funky guitar seems reminescent of RHCP, so thats pretty much a good thing. Rearviewmirror is an awesome song as well, at the end of the song one can here Dave (Abbruzeze) throwing his drum sticks against the wall. Rats is an interesting song, the bassline compliments the tone nicely, as does the solo, over which Eddie displays his admiration for rats and how they all get along. If only everyone applied this to humanity, then the world would be a much better place.
Elderly woman......is reminescent of Daughter, especially the lyrics and the acoustic. Its quite an amazing song.
Leash is bar none one of my favorite songs ever, its the perfect teen angst song, i mean "Drop the leash, get out of my f***king face"? Perfect.
Indifference is okay, but i do like the jazzy feel.
Vs. is a very good album, one of the best I have the privilage of owning. You know what 2 do.

Why are there only 8 reviews?????

This is my favorite pearl jam album ever...and if you don't get the whole thing make sure to get animal, daughter, dissident, rearviewmirror, elderly woman behind the counter in a small town (of course), and leash

Biography

Formed: 1990 in Seattle, WA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After vocalist Andrew Wood overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums. Thanks to future Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, the demo found its way to a 25-year-old San Diego surfer named Eddie Vedder, who overdubbed vocals and original...
