iTunes Review
Portgual The Man shows a knack on its debut album for being unafraid, unconventional, and well versed in a variety of musical genres. Fans of post-rock and the newer “prog” rock sounds have taken notice, although PTM — as it shows in later releases — is chameleon-like enough to shed that skin for a new one at the drop of a hi-hat. The band actually does it here, song to song, moving from playful, melodic pianos and treated vocals on indie-pop tracks (“How the Leopard Got Its Spots,” “Tommy,” and “Chicago”) to post-rocky guitars (“Marching With 6”) and arty noodling (“Waiter” and “Stables and Chairs”). John Gourley’s high-pitched, near falsetto shows signs of promise here, adding an interesting dimension (especially on the sinuous, downtempo-flavored tracks) with its unusual timbre and grace. There are a handful of diamond-in-the-rough moments, but Gourley’s voice is unquestionably an added attraction. “AKA M80 the Wolf” is a core track for the album, with a gurgling electric piano and Gourley’s vocals tumbling along like a backwoods stream. Waiter: You Vultures! is an underrated, adventurous work deserving of more notice than it's gotten.

Where to begin?
Ever since 2003, I have been looking for an album to match or surpass the quality of The Mars Volta's De-Loused In The Comatorium album. Although Waiter: You Vultures! doesn't surpass it (in my opinion) it does come close to matching it. The quality and originality of this album left me speechless and I can't say enough good things about it. If you are a big alternative fan or just looking for something fresh, then this album is a must have.
Superb
I have to say I was blown away by this record. Every song was fufilling with great lyrics, harmonious sounds, and catchy melodies. When I first heard about Portugal. The Man I thought that they were a clone of Panic! At The Disco. I was greatly mis-taken. They have created a new sound all on their own. It's like nothing I have ever heard before. My personal favorite are "Marching with 6", "AKA M80 the Wolf", and "Bad Bad Levi Brown." Please support them and buy this album. Thank You for listening
Forget the skip button.
Once I stumbled upon this band, I knew from the first listen of AKA M80 the Wolf, I was hooked. Even without any knowledge of any other songs, I proceeded to immediatly buy this album. After playing it over and over, without ever touching the skip button, I concluded I had found my favorite band. It's unlike anything I've heard and Portugal.The Man has a sound I think they can call their own. Pumped with emotion, pulsing with power, and never skipping a beat, this could easily find it's way into the top 5 CD's of 2006. Forget the arguement of "it's only February, you can't make that assumption." Buy this album and prove yourself wrong.
