iTunes Review

More than just another dub-derived Kevin Martin project (see also: Pressure, the Bug), King Midas Sound channels snappy, smoke-chased beats and a rain-slicked sense of dread like a Twilight Zone take on the Wild Bunch days of Massive Attack and Tricky. Waiting for You isn’t a trip-hop revival, though; more like a masterpiece of atmospheric electronic music, including the creaking samples and real-deal melancholy of “Meltdown,” the sinister breakup balladry of “Goodbye Girl,” and the galloping, rather ghastly groove of “Lost.” On one level, the whole thing is as bleak as Martin’s Bug records, only it doesn’t feel like a ragga-backed battering ram to the face. Quite the opposite, actually. King Midas Sound is patient, poetic and undeniably paranoid, thanks to Martin’s haunted-house hooks and the vaporous verses of Roger Robinson and King Midas Sound’s new recruit, Kiki. All and all, we’re talking about a truly unsettling listen, one that’s as strangely beautiful/downright debilitating as watching a house burn.

Customer Reviews

kevin martin brings it, again.

this album surpasses my every expectation. i expected cold. i expected massive bass. but never did i expect the lushness that mr. martin and co. have delivered. the vocals make me think of the influences and not in a nostalgic manner. no what we have here is another step forward from the sound-system that has brought the bug, techno animal, god, and multiple other great releases. it's lovers rock for a new era. boom.

KMS linked with Kode9’s Hyperdub label, where they made their proper debut in October 2008 with “Cool Out,” a relatively rugged A-side backed by remixes (of tracks...
