Great Guy
This is one of the few male singers that I listened to after a long(sometimes, scary) mission/day when I was deployed. He calmed me down when I was pumped(either in a good or bad way), or when I was motivated; he MOTIVATED me, like the song "Daughters", he sings what I think of - & for me, sometimes even fight for. It is easy to die for the ones you love, but to fight to see another day, - to LIVE for that person.. . is much, much harder. He inspires me to fight, to live, maybe even to LOVE, one day.
An interesting leadoff single.
Considering the John Mayer Trio songs to be put on "Continuum," this first single is a bit of a surprise. It sounds more akin to Mayer's recent work with other artists - John Scofield and Herbie Hancock, in particular - than his own 'reinvented' sound. As for the track, it's a fairly upbeat track with a bit of social critique. Not so much as to become a new political anthem or anything like that, but about on par with your average Dave Matthews track. There's a disappointing lack of any guitar solos as per the Trio and "Heavier Things," but it seems a one-off amongst the other confirmed tracks on this new album. In any case, it makes for a decent bridging from the poppy Mayer of "Daughters" to the soulful blues guitarist of his most recent work. Looking forward to see what else he has ready on the new album.
Wow...I'm sorry, I really am
I'm sorry to have to say this, but I haven't disliked a song this much since Avril Lavigne's poetic marvel Sk8r Boi. And the thing is I don't dislike John Mayer, I have a kinda love/hate relationship with him, loved Why Georgia and his appearance on Chappelle Show, hated Body is a Wonderland and this, and I'm in between on No Such Thing and Daughters. I've seen him in concert, he's a great guitarist, his John Mayer Trio stuff really shows off his musical chops, and now this? It's like one step forwards five steps backwards. His brand of light, airy and fairly inconsequential pop music just isn't suited for a political statement, I like a lot of his songs but they have an almost poppy indifference to them, and that combined with this song's attitude of "Ehn, what can ya do, we'll just hang around and see if things improve", it could only've been worse if he'd wrote a song whose only lyric is the word "apathy" sung over and over again. The reason I gave it two stars is I feel that a lot of my anger's more directed at the insanely gushy reviewrs on here who think this is God's gift to music, so it'd be unfair to John to completely knock it. People, get a grip, it's at best an apathetic political song set to a Marvin Gaye-ish rip-off sound style. It's just not that good.
