Strong, beautiful debut
This is a lovely record that reflects Melanie's talent across a wide range of genres, from winsome indie songwriter to jazz and blues to full-throated belting. Ben Shive has impeccable taste as a producer, with a really inventive ear for textures and a great economy of sound. There's never too much playing but always enough.
"Ordinary Day" will be on your next Christmas sampler (as it has already been on mine). "Circus Song" and "Balloon" are killer, emotionally naked ballads, the title track has an unexpected, raucous coda that's even better live, and the cover of "Daydream" is as charming as anything on a Weepies record.
C'mon, people, make Melanie famous.
