iTunes Review

Former Jam and Style Council leader Paul Weller has begun experiencing a creative renaissance since breaking 50. 22 Dreams brought him back into relevancy and Wake Up the Nation is a powerful and diverse collection of songs that shoots in all directions. His reunion with the Jam’s bassist Bruce Foxton for the mod-paced “Fast Car/Slow Traffic” (at under two minutes) is as rewarding as his Roy Orbison-styled “No Tears to Cry” or his unlikely pairing with My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields for “7 & 3 Is the Strikers Name.” The keyboard-led instrumental “In Amsterdam” strikes a note of nostalgia for an unspecified time. “She Speaks” loses itself in a whirlwind of piano and polyrhythms that suggest Weller could turn himself into the most unlikely of world music practitioners should he care to switch careers. “Aim High” breaks into a psychedelic funk. “Trees” adds a New Orleans gumbo piano for a sudden shot at rhythm & blues. Weller’s creating a third career with equally convincing intensity.

Wellermania!

An excellent album, one of Paul's best. Paul is re-united with Bruce Foxton (bass guitar player in The Jam) on two tracks. All I can say is buy it, America! The album has been out since mid April in the U.K. - there's an interestingly quirky review of it at icrappoetry (.com), in the tunes section. You can also sample lots of Weller songs there (click on 'Pop-art poem' for example) - many full length, many longer than thirty second samples.

The Changingman has changed again

This album is yet another musical shift from arguably Britain's most prolific and successful singer/songwriter.
Working with producer Simon Dine he has crafted a work of art with influences from Bowie amongst others.
This is an album worth listening to and then buying. If he comes to the US this year, go and see him, it will change your life!

Wow

Welcome back to making music matter Paul! This is the most adventurous thing you have done in a very long time. This record is full of joy. Thank you for not succumbing to doing adult contemporary like Sting. Some of us adults like a challenge and not the same old crap. Paul, you prove that getting older doesn't mean your dreams have to die. You are a shining light in a dreary world.

As the leader of the Jam, Paul Weller fronted the most popular British band of the punk era, influencing legions of English rockers ranging from his mod revival contemporaries to the Smiths in the '80s and Oasis in the '90s. During the final days of the Jam, he developed a fascination with Motown and soul, which led him to form the sophisti-pop group the Style Council in 1983. As the Style Council's career progressed, Weller's interest in soul developed into an infatuation with jazz-pop and house...
