Speaking Her Heart
I recently had the good fortune of hearing Janine Wilson perform live at the Dewey Beach Music Conference in Delaware. In both recorded and live performance, Wilson’s voice is expressive and powerful with beautiful intonation and great dynamic range. On "Wakin’ Up", Wilson and her songwriting partner, Max Evans, have teamed up to create a CD with very high production values and a spectacular collection of songs. It’s no surprise that they’re winning contests, awards and lavish praise from the press. I actually don’t recall ever hearing so many individual songs that could be hits on a single CD from an independent artist.
So what makes "Wakin’ Up" so compelling? For starters, the tunes are catchy and contain a combination of musical gestures that provoke emotion in an almost primal way. Janine Wilson’s vocals along with the impressive guitar work of Max Evans provide the primary vehicle for lyric content. One of the common threads among the individual songs is a focus on the human condition and more specifically, relationships. Wilson knows quite a bit about this – she’d have to in order to create this kind of poetry and deliver it musically in such a palpable way. There’s a wonderful combination of passion and risk in the sense that Wilson draws you into her internal dialogue, her world, and triggers connections with your own life experiences. This is one of the characteristics of great art and gives us reason to believe that Wilson and Evans will continue to create an increasingly important body of work.
