iTunes Review
Walk On is the only Boston album not to feature Brad Delp on lead vocals, and though his presence is sorely missed, the band’s fourth album is a worthy showcase for the talent of Tom Scholz, the band’s resident mastermind. Although he had support from other musicians, Scholz plays every instrument on Walk On, and while some songs lean too much towards studio noodling (“Walkin’ at Night” and “Get Organ-Ized”) others, like “I Need Your Love,” capture the brand of orchestral hard rock that is distinctively Scholz. While Delp doesn’t appear on the album he is credited as co-writer on “Walk On,” the best track here where as replacement singer Fran Cosmo does his best to approximate Delp’s towering vocals, Scholz delivers a track that has enough might to summon the band’s ‘70s heyday. For all the myriad legal and creative battles that dogged Boston for decades, the title track to “Walk On” shows that Tom Scholz still holds a singular vision of rock ’n’ roll splendor.
Customer Reviews
I Hate to Say it...
I hate to say it, but if your looking for more of what makes Boston great, this isn't the place to find it. Some of the songs sound truly Boston-esque - that is, until Fran Cosmo starts singing. Brad Delp, the voice of the real Boston, doesn't sing on this album because he had agreed to sing for the band RTZ (which disbanded before Boston's greatest hits CD, where Brad returns) before Tom Scholz asked Brad to sing on Walk On. Because Brad was already commited to another band, Tom invited Fran Cosmo to sing in Brad's place. Fran's not a bad singer per se, but he just doesn't have the voice that we've come to expect from Boston. So, basically, this CD doesn't really sound like Boston whenever Fran sings. (Hint for Tom:) If Brad were the one singing these songs instead, this would definately be rated five stars. The bottom line: If you want more of that classic Boston sound, stick with the first three albums instead (and don't even think about their most recent album, Corporate America). If you just want some good musc, and can make pretend you're listening to another band, then Walk On may be just what you're looking for.
A Lot of Random Facts (and a review)
Boston's 4th album, Walk On, as mentioned, took 7 years to complete. It appears that the essential work on the album was done in the late 80's, as evidenced by the heavier, more hair-esque guitar riffs, the heavily mixed drums, and the influence of power ballads over many of the songs. All in all, the album is alright, but the loss of star vocalist Brad Delp definitely hurt the bands sound. Finally, the The power ballad, over-popular in the 80's, pretty much ruins the stylishness implied by the power riffs of the first song, "I Need Your Love," the best on the album.
Why such bad reviews?
I honestly think that this album is an amazing piece of work! This album shows some great guitar talent from Tom Scholtz, although the album does not compare equally to their debut album Boston, or even Dont Look Back, it is still definetley worth purchasing. I am tired of people complaining that this is album is their downfall...and it really is'nt
