Album Review

Sweet vocal jazz for the post-club generation that could have been made decades ago, Koop's debut album finely treads the line between the hipster posturing and lounge perfection that is the specialty of acid jazz radio guru Gilles Peterson. Lush orchestration and hard bop rhythms make Waltz for Koop a pleasing sensation, but it is the rotating cast of vocalists that gives the album a strength beyond kvetch. Newcomers Cecilia Stalin and Yukimi Nagano both follow the fluttering vocal lineage of Astrud Gilberto on two songs each. The ladies perform effortlessly next to songs featuring certified vocal greats Earl Zinger and Terry Callier, each of whom wrote the lyrics to their respective numbers, "Modal Mile" and "In a Heartbeat." Callier's turn is the highlight of the album, with Koop augmenting the master's voice and their own retro melodies with subtly modern sounds, creating a fusion that remains true to the traditional form while staking their own 21st century musical claim. Though Koop occasionally steps into pretension (the album contains several unnecessary vocal interludes taken from old jazz programs), Waltz for Koop is one of those rare albums that succeeds in paying homage to the artist's heroes without sounding like watered-down versions of said forerunners. Put any of this album's songs on a mix tape next to a classic by Elis Regina or Chet Baker, and see if it doesn't fit together.

Short, sweet and to the point

This album isn't very long, but it is very memorable. It's obvious that they sampled Jazz loops, but they way that they did it really impresses. They managed to mix Electronica and Jazz in a way that I've never heard before. Sure, it may be easy to do, but the result is an infectious album. "Waltz for Koop", the lead track provides a dreamy sound that's very easy to get into. "Tonight", "Baby", Soul for Sahib", "Modal Mile" and "Summer Sun" sound more traditional from a Jazz standpoint. And it sounds GREAT! "In a Heartbeat" was the only one I didn't like. I just wasn't quite with the the guy that was singing this one. "Relaxing at Club F****n", is a great laidback house track. "Bright Nights" is ok, but I don't think it really fts. All in all, for any fan of both Jazz and Electronica, you will LOVE this one. It's a pretty good Album despite the short length.

A Tonic to Mediocrity

This is a minor classic. Just short enough to make you want to replay it right away. The mix of male & female vocals satisfies both spouses. All the vocals are sexy without tawdriness. The songs float and move at the same time with the jazzy beats and lush orchestration complemeting each other. I first heard-tell of Koop by hearing Summer Sun, but I came to LOVE (title song) Waltz for Koop. It's beautifully ironic: A lovely, softly sung, gently delivered song about a fundamental disconnect in a rocky relationship. very sofisticated stuff. And I love the 3 minute format. It's the perfect length. None of the songs are dogs and there's some variety without straying too far from the general program. Very cool.

Big fan

I have really gotten into jazz/electronica and can't get enough of "Waltz for Koop" and "Baby" on this album. Great chill music!
