Want One, Rufus Wainwright’s third album, finds Wainwright and veteran producer Marius deVries working to shore up the sonic supports that make his art so compelling. Stunningly opulent, Want One embroiders his work with pizzicato strings, woozy cabaret brass, chiming vibes and a thousand other theatrical, but masterfully deployed sonic adornments. If Want One’s production is monolithically ornate, Wainwright’s songwriting remains as varied as ever, folding power-pop, show tunes, waltzes, and wild-eyed Bossa tempos into its ample embrace. The six and a half minute long “Go Or Go Ahead” plays like a Big Star showstopper as rendered by Radiohead, while “Beautiful Child” combines multi-layered harmonies worthy of Marc Bolan with the expansiveness of a Brian Wilson production. Want One is an impressive and thoroughly entertaining demonstration of Wainwright’s prodigious talents as a singer, songwriter, and arranger.

His Greatest Achievement
Every aspect of this album screams with beautiful emotion, serene landscapes, and pristine vocals. Perhaps blessed with the best voice in music, Rufus gives the world an album that exceeds all expectations, even after Poses. While Want Two takes a darker approach to life, the positive vibe one feels here is unmatched in many aspects of music. "Oh What a World" inflates the rest of the album. "Vibrate" allows his voice to crescendo. "Natasha" is unmistakeningly gorgeous. "Beautiful Child" speaks for itself, classic. "11:11" truly makes you feel good. sheerly beautiful
This album is beautiful and classic with every song and lyric. It opens with "Oh What a World", a repetitive ditty that is catchy and even though the verses are the same, it seems to build up in tension and meaning and purpose. "I Don't Know What It Is" should be a national anthem for practically everyone today, expressing confusion and doubt while showing hope for a newer future through its orchestra of operatic sounds and melodies. "Movies of Myself" is another personal favorite, sounding fairly similar to "Shadows" on his 2nd album, Poses, and "The One You Love", on Want Two. It has a catchy beat and uses confusing but yet still sensible word analogies and romantic lines to reel you in and keep you begging for more. "Go or Go Ahead" is simply gorgeous in every way, and is Rufus's dealing with drug addiction. However, my favorite thing about his writing style is that often you know what he's saying (either he tells you in an interview or you just understand) or trying to express without saying it directly. He has a beautiful way of cutting around the subject but still cutting to the point. Then there's "14th Street", a very light and uplifting song that I adore, and that quickly became one of my favorites. Another very interesting track is "Beautiful Child" which is adequately named. The song has an uplifiting beat but yet fairly somber lyrics that will entrance almost any listener. "11:11" is another beautiful song that I have taken to heart, with its story-like quality and sense of endearment of time and of its importance (at least in one aspect). Those are the highlights of this album, as far as I'm concerned, and if you don't do anything right in your life BUY THIS ALBUM!
One of the best albums I own
Want One is a beautiful album, probably one of the best albums ive ever heard. it really shows how much growth Rufus had made between his previous album. There are songs that really touch the bottom of your sould if you listen to them. The honesty in his lyrics is a gift to anyone who listens.
