iTunes Review
With their third album, 1983’s War, U2 came together as a fully charged unit as the anthemic “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “New’Year’s Day,” “Seconds,” and “40” prepared the Irish quartet for worldwide arenas. Again, Steve Lillywhite works his producer’s magic, keeping the band’s raw, visceral energy intact while emphasizing their sonic palette’s preference for imagistic guitar hooks. Bono had always aimed for a wide, sweeping, grandiose tone, but it’s here where he matures into a singer who can carry the weight of his political and personal convictions. Thematically, it’s a heavy album, handling the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Northern Ireland, the era of nuclear arms proliferation, and the suppression of the Solidarity movement in Poland. Yet, one doesn’t have to be versed in world events to enjoy the passion the group brings to these songs. “Two Hearts Beat As One” works as both a grand gesture and as an intimate love song. “Like A Song” chimes with a furious undercurrent pushing it forward.

The ORIGINAL American Idiot
Green Day's American Idiot was obviously based off of War. They both have the same main theme: the world is seriously messed up. The main difference is that Green Day decided to load it with explicit language and War is much better. Here's my song-by-song breakdown! 1) Sunday Bloody Sunday 11/10: This is the greatest song ever written by anyone ever. An amazing combo of deep lyrics and an insane drum part! The only song that I will ever rank above 10/10. 2) Seconds 9/10: Contrasting happy-sounding instruments and creepy lyrics (and little kids) makes a great song! 3) New Year's Day 10/10: War's other gem, a song with a great climax and bass part. 4) Like a Song 8/10: Only forgotten because its right behind three classics. Very underrated. 5) Drowning Man 7/10: A little forgettable and slow, but not that bad. 6) The Refugee 9/10: This song always seems to be forgotten, but I love it, mainly because of the African sound. 7) Two Hearts Beat as One 9/10: A great song, and perfect for running to. 8) Red Light 6/10: Worst on album. Female singers and U2 do NOT mix. 9) Surrender: 6/10: Another boring and predictable song. Makes you wonder why the album is downward spiralling. 10) 40 9/10: A great closer, even though it doesn't match the rest of the upbeat album. Love the Psalm lyrics!
Classic!
Buy WAR because it is truely one of U2's all-time best. But buy it because it contains the song: Drowning Man. A classic, one of U2's best, but most overlooked and unappreciated songs ever.
Gritty and Passionate
U2 conveys their pain of the attacks in Ireland through the music of War. Sunday Bloody Sunday truly shows they are not just doing this for money. This is a great album because every song belongs in there every song reprsents War and they flow well.
