Customer Reviews
A confident hand
McGlashan crafts assured, subtle, slightly folkish rock, stripping it down to bare guitar and then layering on just enough percussion, faint brushes of strings and brass, and a few carefully chosen electronic effects to make it feel incredibly rich without ever being too much. His easy way with words, too, pops up in song after song, as he slips in unexpected lyrical caresses ("I think of how you looked when you saw me off / Your green dress slowly getting lost") and daggers ("He's a fine and healthy child / His dad's eyes and his mother's smile, but he's got webbed fingers and a fish's tail"); the impact of "And a voice says 'This is London'," accented just by the drawing back of nearly all the instrumentation, is hard to communicate without hearing it. Well worth import prices, this album is an incredible steal at the iTunes price.
One of the Best of 2006.
Once again iTunes takes me by surprise and has a hard to find import available for download. Don McGlashan was in the great New Zealand pop band The Mutton Birds. I would say they were in line with the finer moments of R.E.M. The Mutton Birds never saw the light of day in the U.S. This is the first solo release by McGlashan and it is by far one of the best releases of 2006. "Toy Factory Fire" is one the most thought provoking songs I have heard in a long while. “Miracle Sun” is the song you want as the soundtrack to a beautiful dream or maybe a drive along the coast. If you like smart well done pop music then this is your ticket to something really special.
