Album Review

Grace Jones teamed with the great reggae production duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare on this '80 album, and made the transition from straight dance and club act into quasi-pop star with reggae and urban contemporary leaning. The single "Private Life" was one of her best, and the overall album had more energy and production gloss than previous LPs that had been aimed completely at the club market. It helped that Jones seemed enthused about the session and really put herself into the songs.

Awesome!

This album and NIGHTCLUBBING are masterpieces. Two of my favorite albums.

The Album that changed Grace Jones

When this album came out, it changed every perception of Grace with due accolades. Warm Leatherette changed the way we heard music, it is textured and a bit rough with some illusiveness but pointed. Love is the drug and Breakdown stand out however every song truely is a Grace Classic. Get this and enjoy, the production is stellar and was very progressive at the time. Excellent choice iTunes USA.

this album was a game changer

after several years as a second rate disco diva who earned the derision of musical reviewers, gracde jones finally emerged as an artist to be reckoned with in "warm leatherette." what's most important about this album, however, is that not only did jones successfully makeover her image, but, in tbose compass point sessions of the early 80s, under the guidance of sly, robbie & producer chris blackwell, she bascially inveented dub. at the time this album, as well as "night clubbing" & "living my life" were released, music of this genre hadn't been heard before. was it reggae? was it rock? was it disco? no one could really put a finger on what it was but, whatever it was, it was damned effective. it made grace jones into an icon and established her as an artist whose influence survives to this day.

my only complaint is the original album cover, depicting jones with her brand new bellhop haircut and issey miyake "football suit" has been replaced by a more generic image lifted from one of her videos.

Grace Jones was one of the more unforgettable characters to emerge from New York City's hedonistic Studio 54 disco scene during the late '70s. Born May 19, 1952, in Kingston, Jamaica, Jones studied theater at Syracuse University before launching a career as a model. Jones' statuesque and flamboyant look proved to be a hit in the New York City nightclub scene, which led to a recording contract with Island Records in 1977. While such disco-based albums as 1977's Portfolio, 1978's Fame, and 1979's Muse...
