piercing the hardest of hearts, thawing the coldest of souls
As a pop music connoisseur, a wary state of mind accompanies my high expectations as I approach new artists. So often, in looking for their voice, they come off as too saccharine, fall victim to uninteresting/anachronistic production, or just don't have the holistic skill set it takes to be an artist worth hearing. Michael Alvarado falls victim to none of these pitfalls. "Waste the Day" achieves soaring simplicity without sacrificing an ounce of intelligent arrangement and subtle delivery. First love is visited with melodies that seem immediately familiar, though yet unheard. The guitar and piano accompaniment is no work of a rookie--an underlying jazz feel will serve to sate the more advanced listener, while remaining accessible to comparative babies. Precisely layered background vocals put this EP over the top--they add a warmth to the already smooth message and pierce the hardest of hearts, thaw the coldest of souls. I mean that with all seriousness, that those who have forgotten love will suddenly remember and those not yet caught in its clutches will be suddenly, giddily impatient. And the voice! I already mentioned "smooth" and "soaring" but they suddenly apply again. Smooth and professional in overall delivery and soaring with sudden visits to pristine, falsetto peaks. This is a voice ready for the big leagues. Indeed, this is a voice, a performance, and an EP that can take a subject revisited millions of times and make it new and exciting again.
