Most brilliantly DEVOlved idea since Duty Now for the Future
This is the most brilliantly devolved idea Devo has had since 1979's Duty Now for the Future. What makes it so great? Three things: 1. The mere idea of using a commercial to introduce the song is the most twistedly cool idea I've seen in the last 20 years. Sure, some bands get famous, then sell their songs for ads (Dandy Warhols, Moby), some refuse to "sell out," but now Devo turns that on its head! Commercial FIRST! Then release the song! It's brilliant. 2. Have you played the song on auto-repeat yet? There are two instrumental breaks in the song, and BOTH of them sound similar to how the song ends and starts again in repeat mode. Try it: as the song is getting to the end, keep the beat and notice how the song, essentially, never ends! I played it 3 times accidently before I noticed it was repeating. Another twistedly cool idea using technology to $@#@!^% with our heads. Devolution indeed. 3. Did I mention the song itself is killer? Guitar, synth, Devo the way God intended. This proves that even though 1985's SHOUT may have seemed to be the end of Devo, they're nowhere NEAR the end of their creative tether. Go spuds!
Watch Us Work It
DEVO has stated time and time again they would record and release new material when the time was right and they had something to say. That time is now. Visit ClubDEVO.com for more devolved info.
Toe-tappin' fun
DEVO has always been able to get me movin' with their catchy rythms and riffs. This is no exception. I have to give it 4 stars though. It is not their best work (but neither was 'Whip It'). But this should get the attention of a new DEVO audience. And keeping it just over 2 minutes means it may get some airplay. The cowbell is great! Yes they recycled a drum track, so what, it's a good track! The rumor is that DELL heard several "new" DEVO songs when they picked this one for their commercial. I suspect that if this single does well we will see a new DEVO album soon. Bring it on! DEVO was right.
