Expand Your Horizons
This Czech underground group named for the Bernini statue in Rome may have started as ambient and shoegaze but has crossed over solidly into funky but fascinating pop. Fronted by former model Winterova (hey, Sade was also a fashion horse), who breathes and whispers sweat nothings in English, the accomplished band seems distractly obsessed with odd sources of sound, using all sorts of concrete and synthetic devices including Theremin to draw you into their unique world. Stumbled upon this collection after I heard "Hit by a Cycle", which remains a favorite. Well worth your time and a refreshing change from screaming punk, unintelligble rap and vacuous top 40.
