iTunes Review
Swimming With Dolphins’ music hits the ear with sparkling waves of pulsating sound, carrying messages of love, longing and faith upon its bubbling beats. Weathering the departure of Adam Young (of Owl City mega-fame), SWD carries on as the brainchild of Austin Tofte, who augments his breezy lead vocals with the sweet tones of touring member Sarah Beintker and (on “Happiness”) guest singer Sunsun. The music here is a frothy confection of surging melodies, sunny choruses and starry-eyed sentiments, often bringing to mind ‘80s-era techno-pop and early computer-game soundtracks. “Sleep to Dream,” “Holiday,” “Jacques Cousteau” and similar tunes provide sustained bursts of pure positive energy both musically and lyrically. “Diplomat” and “Happiness” introduce some funkiness into the mix; “Good Times” opens up to allow hip-hop artist Mod Sun to deliver a rap segment. While boy/girl love is SWD’s favorite subject, the shimmering mid-tempo track “Captured” offers heartfelt praise to the Lord.
Customer Reviews
tofte is a trooper
i've more than overplayed the ambient blue ep, ever since i stumbled upon swimming with dolphins a few summers ago, i've been dying for more.. and now it's finally here! i appreciate austin's unique blend of synth and vocals, there's really nothing comparable to his sound.. and this is a sound that i'm incredibly in love with.. just bought the album and can't wait to set it on repeat like i did with ambient blue
so austin, thank you for persevering and delivering
An excellent synth-pop production from a relative unknown
Swimming with Dolphins began with "Ambient Blue", an EP that introduced this project's airy, take-you-away synth-pop style that favors heavy keyboard use and sweeping rave choruses all wrapped up in a lovestruck, optimistic package reminiscent of Owl City (fitting, given the band was originally a duo featuring Owl City's Adam Young). With "Water Colours", Swimming with Dolphin's now lone member Austin Tofte has grown in his own way, establishing a presence in this latest work that's all his own. The sweeping sounds are still there, especially on "Jacques Cousteau" and the opener "Holiday", both of which open with inspiration melodies and only get better from there. Perhaps the highlight of the album is the title song "Watercolors", which features an echoey chorus and percussion beat that steals the show. It's unfair to pick out a few songs as being better than the rest (though "Easy" and "Happiness" are both skippable after the first few listens); what you're getting here is an amazing debut album and the kind of stuff that represents the indie synth-pop sound so well. At the same time, there's nothing quite like Swimming with Dolphins out there... If you want to feel like dancing, fist-pumping, and thinking about love won and lost, you need to buy this one. Props to Tofte for including Minneapolis rapper Mod Sun on the closing track "Good Times" for a refreshing, eye-on-the-future closer that will be on replay for awhile. Then again, the whole album will.
