Album Review

Animal Collective LPs are dizzying affairs (even to fans), jumping from song to song and mood to mood with barely a look backward at what preceded it. Therefore, the Water Curses EP is a good opportunity to see Animal Collective in action on a small scale. Certainly, there's no lack of quality here compared to the better-promoted LPs: the title track is a bruising but nimble piece of warped psychedelic pop; second track "Street Flash" is a more extended meditation, prosaic but equally fervid. (If you were forced to pin the group down to two basic modes of operation, these two tracks would be excellent examples.) Both of them show AC at the peak of their powers of songwriting and production.

Continuing the Strawberry Jam Era

With every release Animal Collective's signature style is becoming more accessible to those looking for something more original. This EP is an excellent entry level excercise, as it contains the softer, more reflective and the more wild of their collection. The album continues their usual antics adding nice contrast to Strawberry Jam. The EP maintains a more inward sound with street flash and seal eyeing, managing the softness that never came from their last album, Strawberry Jam. The title track is more on its own as an Animal Collective single (and released as such prior to the full water curses release). Cobwebs is a staple of the EP and really justifies the purchase price, it is an epic track that builds to a satisfying climax. The EP is much more a miniature album then it is a collection of extras left over from another album, all four tracks contribute to the albums cohesive texture and are easily worth the small price that is asked for them. Looking forward to their next full length release.

Another A+ album

From the first 10 seconds to the dying out of the final track, this album is a work-out of Animal Collective's ability. For much of their music, it takes a couple of listens to fully enjoy it; however this one seems to be instantly enjoyable and instantly lovable. Whether you're a diehard fan, or looking for something new, check out this EP.

My inner dolphin is pleased
