Album Review

On their second album, TLC downplay their overt rap connections, recording a smooth, seductive collection of contemporary soul reminiscent of both Philly soul and Prince, powered by new jack and hip-hop beats. Lisa Lopes contributes the occasional rap, but the majority of CrazySexyCool belongs to Tionne Watkins and Rozonda Thomas. While they aren't the most accomplished vocalists — they have a tendency to be just slightly off-key — the material they sing is consistently strong. As the cover of Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" indicates, TLC favor erotic, mid-tempo funk. Yet the group removes any of the psychosexual complexities of Prince's songs, leaving a batch of sexy material that just sounds good, especially the hit singles. Both "Creep" and "Red Light Special" have a deep groove that accentuates the slinky hooks, but it's "Waterfalls," with its gently insistent horns and guitar lines and instantly memorable chorus, that ranks as one of the classic R&B songs of the '90s.

I'm just kidding five stars

As far as fluffy R&B soul/pop goes, TLC (this album especially) is pretty damn good. It actually has a lot of the soul influence that modern R&B artists (Destiny's Child) claim they have, but don't. There's a lot of really funky rhythm parts that help cement that fact. Granted the rapping portions I don't care for, and most of the lyrics could give Stevie Wonder a run for his money. But, all in all, this is probably the last great R&B album, Chris Brown sure as hell can't top this.

I absolutely LOVE TLC...all of their songs, their own individual styles, their real-ness.
And what is great about them is that you cannot find a copy or imitation of TLC anywhere...and never ever will there be another CrazySexyCool-like album by anyone (except maybe Tionne and Rozonda if they would re-charge the group - i think their recent performance in Japan may contribute to that actually happening). But they are (I refuse to use the word "were") amazing...I listen to their music everyday. I have almost all their music since I lost my tapes (omg...i feel old) and have been downloading from iTunes. But if kids had this type of music nowadays, I think there might be a small, if not big, difference in some of their behavior!
TLC...woot woot!
